Just started a 30g freshwater, low light plants for now until I upgrade lighting, flourite substrate accented with river rock and black gravel, three mickey mouse platies in, day four of cycle. Equipment, two HOB filters. Here are before pics and as progressing, still adding to stand which is DIY from things laying around the house, except for the railing posts.

I agree with the rock thing.
And I hope you dont expect the differnt colored gravel to stay separate for more than a week. When you siphon the gravel during a water change it'll all mix up.

The whole adding fish process should AFTER the cycle.
Welcome to the fresh water side btw, good to have ya. Ask any questions you may have.

Yeah, it takes extra time to clean the gravel, but again, it's worth it. This is a used setup and I am starting slowly, when I have the money, I'll add some authentic pieces to compliment the tank.
