No worries, happy for a topic change
Our laws are very strict here and punishments are serious and heavy. No collection is allowed in any of the marine parks or around teh Great Barrier Reef as they are heavily protected and patrolled. A large portion of our coastlines are protected and collection is illeagal, even by those with licenses. Things like rocks and algae are all under this cover and you're not allowed to remove things from the beaches.
There are still quite a few reefs that are able to be collected from but licenses are required and it's still heavily regulated
That being said yes we get plenty of local corals, most are in fact local as most corals are banned for import due to our very strong bio-security laws! Occasionally shipments from Indonesia and the surrounds come through with some nice pieces but most of the coral on the Australian market is of local origin. We unfortunately lose a large portion of the high quality and rare stock as they fetch much larger prices in the US so they get shipped off but slowly do we get a trickle of the amazing stock that you see regularly
Our acropora stocks are very good very frequently, euphyllia, catalaphyllia and the like are very cheap and beautiful because of the local availability and the ease of which they are obtained.
Even our aquaculture, mariculture and general propagation of corals is regulated (which I think is stupid given the aim of these people!). The prime example is our amazing AcroAl, who is the first person in the world to have breed and aquacultured clams of several different species! He has had to jump through hoop after hoop to get the correct permissions and approvals and documents just to be able to sell and such!
Most of our permits and regulations come through the Wildlife and Fishery authorities, councils have a say as well, the EPA is involved and for the Great Barrier Reef, the government run Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority are in control
Hopefully that helps answer your question
