How long can a snail live out of water?

Just doing a little cabinet cleaning, and I found 3 nerite snails. In my RSM 500 there was one on the left hand side, laying on the plastic shelf on the bottom. I decided to lift it up, and found two more on the floor! No idea how long they have been down there, but the shells were bone dry. I tossed them into the tank, and within 5 minutes all are moving and scavenging. I am amazed!

It's too bad I can't get to the right hand side under the sump, I would bet I'd find a few more under there. Red Sea needs to make edging that goes all the way to the floor to prevent snails from getting lost and dying under the tank.

I found a nerite that had been out of tank at least 12 hrs, thought it was dead, wrong. I guess they are used to going quite a while out of the water when caught in a dry tide pool.
