I use about 1 cup of activated carbon in my 90 gal and replace it monthly. It must not remove too many trace elements because my reef stays very healthy; however, i do perform a 10% waterchange every week which does replenish trace elements. Also, be sure to soak all new carbon in ro/di water to help remove the phospates before using it (all carbon has PO4).

Kent's carbon instruction says to use it for only 3 or 4 days as it removes trace elements. However, other manufacturers claims theirs does not remove trace elements. I add trace elements anyways...so I don't really care about too much carbon...more on too little. Seachem always seem to suggest higher dosage while Kent says lower.
