sump plumbing question

Sooo, this is probably a really dumb question but..... the plumbing going from the tank to the sump, should end above or below the waterline in the sump? I never really thought of it before ut it seems that below would be quieter but for some reason it also strikes me as a potential bad idea with suction or something......

above the water line you'll hear crashing, below the water line you'll hear bubbling (assuming you have air in the line). If you are a full siphon (no air in the line) then go below the water line. The siphon on the drain will only go so far. the siphon on the return line is more of a concern but that can be addressed by drilling a hole just below the water line on the return outlet......once the water reached the hole, air enters and breaks the siphon.

make sure to test the system to ensure your sump can handle any water volume flowing to it in the event of a power failure.
