question about price of halide lights

I went to a garage sale today and found metal halide fixture/ballast/bulb for $100. They have never been used and they are 250W. Is this a good deal? He said the bulbs are 65k spectrum. I have never dealt in metal halide before so just wasn't sure.

I wish i went to that yard sale. yes that is a good deal. on our craigslist there is a USED hailide fixture with bulbs that need to be replaced for 90 so that is a great deal.

only thing is that the reflectors are just thin sheet metals and have no "splash guard" under the bulb. When I looked up MH lights online I only see thick black fixtures, is that only for cosmetics?

It could be but you said it had no splash guard. Someone with more halide exp will give you a definite answer.

i believe you bought a retro MH. Most retro setups dont have a splash guard... i think

I have not purchased it yet. I'm trying to get imput from you people that use MH lights first to see if im getting a good deal.

The deal is not bad, but as redsea said, it is not for aquarium use, it is for gardening.
You can take it, but you need to replace the bulb, and also attention the splash issue. I do have ever seen ppl using this design on tanks.
