Protein Skimmer - Air Valve question

I am new to using a protein skimmer and was wondering if its better to have the air valve closed or open. When i took off the cap it seemed to be more action going on. lol obviously im new at this

Hi there,

I went through the same thing and come to find out, you need to leave the skimmer alone until its primed, meaning a good slime coat builds up within the tubing chamber. I left my air valve just slightly opened throughout this trial and after about the 3rd day, it was sucking up all the green/brownish water out of my tank, but too much water as well. Best thing to do is let it run for a few days while it builds up the coat then gradually open the air valve I slight amount per couple of days until you see the results you want
