I'm wondering if this pump is even meant for the 9002? It sounds more like a utility pump - return pump, reactor pump, etc. It doesn't even mention using it in a 9002 skimmer. The 3rd review on the Marine Depot page didn't sound very good either!

Most of the skimmer pumps start out life as utility pumps. they just get a new volute and impeller. There aren't many pumps designed for skimmers specifically.

As far as being pricey, check out the watts a Tunze pump draws, and compare it to other similar pumps. The Tunze Silence pumps 634 GPH using 30 watts. A Mag 5 uses 45 watts; a Mag 7 uses 70 watts. An Eheim 1260 uses 65 watts. Besides being cheaper to run, fewer watts means less heat transfer.

It really pays to buy Tunze

Shows that old pump has been phased out in favor of the new #, but definitely not the "Silence Pumps"

It has another 10gph in flow, it is quieter due to a ceramic shaft and bearings but not much else has changed. It cannot be easily retrofitted so we continue to stock the older pump.

good point mavjoy - guess 10 gph is not a lot... but over a year... it sounds like more :) you skim an additional 87,600 gals, but that is less than a 1% improvement... nothing to get real excited about...
