Lights and Skimmer on or off?

Lights don't matter much, other than during the cycle, water quality will most likely not be at it's highest, and an extended photo period may cause unwanted microalgaes to flourish. I always started skimming as soon as the tank was filled and operational. No sense leaving any unwanted proteins and gunk in the tank to create more pollutants.

The pro's may be that any coral HH'ers would benefit from having a photoperiod, but keep it short for the reasons BoomerD mentioned.

I started my 46 gal about a month ago and have run the lights and skimmer from day one. I've not tried it without the lights on, but I don't think all the stuff that is popping out of the live rock would have survived without the light. It gives me something interesting to watch while I wait to add livestock. Judging from the amount of brown liquid removed, I'm glad I have run the skimmer all along.

Just keep the light on while you view the tank, maybe for 2 hours. Skimmer going at all times during the cycle.
