How much water should a skimmer remove?

This skimmer has me confused...

I have a 75gal tank. My protien skimmer is removing a gallon of water in a couple of days. This water does look green, dirty, and dingy, so I am not sure if this is because of a recent move or somthing else. I have it in a sump, and the collection cup is about an inch above the water level when the bubble maker is off. My skimmer is pretty basic and small compared to ones I have seen. The water in the main tank is not even as clean as I would like it. I do have a few layers of filter media.

what is wrong?

That does sound like a lot of water and should be adjusted so not to take out as much water but if it is really dark green/brown, stinks really bad, then its something that you want taken out of DT. While you are getting the hang of adjusting the skimmer just be sure that you are keeping up on your topoff and water parameters.
