HOB filter bio wheel

Hello all
I have a simple 29g with a bio wheel and have had it for years. tank is healthy and have had very little issues overtime. My question is, after the tank is established (three years or so now) do I still need the wheel in the filter? I have already removed the trays and converted to my own filter pad setup but feel like the wheel is just redundant at this point. Any thoughts?

Assuming you have enough live rock in the tank, you can remove the bio-wheels, and your system will never miss them. Consider that the surface area of the live rock is many times greated what you get on a bio-wheel.

That is exactly how I felt but I could not find anything supporting on removing it. I have plenty of live rock, a DSB and a healthy tank.
