Frag Tank! 40G Breeder Build

Well the time has come to begin a new DIY project. I discussed possibly building this in a previous thread and last night I did a little brainstorming and here is what I think the layout will look like. I find it easier to draw what I'm planning before I begin the actual work because too many times I'll begin a project and what I think will be the finished product ends up being something entirely different then what I originally had planned:) It's also an easy way to lay out and pre-cut as much as I can in order to save time, money and improve accuracy.

The aim here is to build a show frag tank with a completely open design that will not be an eyesore due to equipment or wires. If you've viewed my thread http://www.reefsanctuary.com/forums/reef-chronicles/74137-my-150-tall-journey.html you'll notice that almost all of my wood projects are almost always stained or left natural due to the fact that I'm a bigger fan of natural wood and the colors and grains that they offer then covering them up with paint. However, this project may give me hives and anxiety because I'm seriously considering PAINTING the entire stand. :help1:

Also one of the reasons I want it to look superb is the fact that the seeded thoughts that I have today, may not be the same thoughts tomorrow. Meaning this tank could easily transform itself from a frag tank to a small reef, mantis, or whale shark tank just because...

As always, love it, hate it, comment and suggest all you like. Your thoughts and ideas are always welcome.

With that being said, here is my crude drawing of what the initial layout will look like.

Stand looks great. Why 20.75 wide? Do you need that much gap to get your sump in?

Following along, but more curious about what equipment you are going with and the design of your frag rack (I don't like the one I am using in my 40b FT) .

...stupid auto correct

Why 20.75 Mike? Well that answer is easy...Because 18.25 + 1" is 20.75 isn't it? LOL

It seems my arithmetic is slightly off on that number because I'm...well NVM:) That number is 19.75 and thanks for the catch Mike!

My sump may more than likely be a 20L depending on how ambitious I feel when it comes time for that. I can make it out of acrylic as I have a full sheet however, that stuff makes a mess and handling 4x8 sheets alone gets old after a while. But we'll see....

I had some time today to make all of the cuts for the stand and tomorrow I'll start drilling and screwing.

I'm looking for some input on the returns on this tank.

I like to keep the returns as close to the surface as possible so minimal siphon occurs in a power outage.

As I mentioned earlier I want to make this as clean and neat as possible and If I can get away with it, I'd rather NOT have any power heads in the tank and have all of the flow performed by the return pump.

Here are three items I was considering.

Any suggestions on which one or any other ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Although I have never used those you mentioned, I have read reviews and comments about how much they reduce flow.

I think you have a very good idea - not using any powerheads.

I'm thinking (I know, watch out), how about using something like a Mag 9.5 and put three nozzles on a loc-line?

Made those comments before I looked at your links. The reviews say the same thing. I have used one before and it's somewhere in my collection of stuff in the closet.

This is the pump I was planning on using: Syncra 5.0 Pump: 1321gph, 12.6' max head, 5.47psi

The thing is, once I drill the tank, there is no going back so I want to make sure I have a solid plan before whipping the drill out and going nuts. LOL

I'm a big fan of Sicce pumps, very quiet. I have 4 of them running right now. I've had a return running for over two years and its never been cleaned, gets shut off 2 - 3 times a day, and still shoots the water out.

A good friend of mine hooked me up with a yet another ASM skimmer...FREE! This one is a G2 and it will be used on the frag tank. All I need to do is buy the pump.

Skimmer....Check - Led Light...Check - Unfinished Stand....ummmm

All I need to do now is get my lazy %#^&*# in the basement and finish the stand that I haven't touched since I painted it.

I spoke to Joe at http://apolloreefled.com/ when ordering the light and he was kind enough to hook me up with one of his SolarBlast UV-6000 and a controller at a GREAT price so how could I say no?

With the toys slowly being delivered It gave me a little inspiration to get my butt in gear and start trimming the stand.
