Dam, I was just about to panic, then I thought, wait, that is in your tank,, Not mine.

That stuff is fairly common and the bubbles are oxygen made by that scurvy, sticky algae. Hermit crabs don't lay eggs on a rock, they keep them in their shell like other crabs.
Something laid this in my tank. I'm thinking "Chicken of the Sea"

Do you think it could have been caused from overfeeding?

It's a mystery (at least to me) why we see this happen so sporadically in tanks. I've seen it in new tanks as well as established tanks. My theory is that your tank was teetering on the edge of an outbreak and something either changed suddenly or slowly changed over time enough to push the conditions in FAVOR of the dinos and they literally exploded into action.

All I know is to stay on top of it and don't be afraid to be aggressive in daily removal.
