Sure its not red slime. Sometimes it looks brown and stringy. I had it on some rocks and not others the way you described your problem. I used Red Slime Control from Blue Life. Worked great, was gone within 2-3 days.

Sleeper Gold Head Goby. The white specks are sand. He is sifting through the sand for food. Very nice and colorful fish. Had him for about a month.
