Running an LFS has got to be hard work

A week or so ago I dropped by my favorite LFS. I was saddened to see his fish were looking poorly. A lot had ich & several banks of display tanks were being treated. I felt bad because in the several years being open he always had nice looking livestock. IMO the best in my area . I stopped by again today & his crew was busy draining & scrubbing out all the displays.& breaking down filtration systems. The back room was stuffed with temporary containers full of coral frags & makeshift filtration. I didn't ask what happened specifically but he say he had been battling several types of disease then the cold snap was the last straw. He decided to clean & sanitize it all & start again. He said it would be at least couple weeks before he was ready to go again. That had to be quite a hit for his business. I applaud the guy for doing the right thing. I have walked into the other shops in my area with the same poor looking livestock again & again. They just keep restocking. It has got to be a tough way to make a buck! I'm going to do what little I can to keep this LFS's doors open.

Nitrate (NO3) reduction is directly proportional to percentage of Water Change.
Allen's home-made formula...(-NO3=WC%)
This means if you change 50% of your total water volume (That's EVERYTHING) you'll get a net reduction of (NO3) somewhere around 50%.

Ask me about how to increase your REEF budget without going without FOOD!!

Re: Running an LFS has got to be hard work

Sounds good, I have worked at 3 fish stores(2 full line, im not just a fish guy, im the small animal/dog/reptile/cat guy too ) in a span of 6 years....all about 2 years each, I was the asst. manager of the 2 full line stores, and just a do-boy at the first....It is hard work to run these places, its easier with a staff that knows what they are doing, one of my 3 stores i worked at, the staff was horrible, i never got along with any of them, the owner like me though....they were just there, didnt care about customers, just how much they could sell them...not me.... i knew better.

Re: Running an LFS has got to be hard work

There are some good ones mixed in with the others. I have one very close by that carries some SW and is the first to tell you he knows nothing. BUT, he's willing to learn, and I've been helping him with suggestions. He's coming to the house tonight to see the tank, and I've been trying to talk him into joining here. I think he will. Another cool thing he does is before he sells any animal, he researches them, tries to raise them, finds out their needs, THEN he puts them up for sale. His name is Clint and owns Pets Gone Wild so "when" he signs up give him a warm welcome!
