I want a clam!?

Where are some places to look, I have checked clams direct, they have really nice stuff. They seemed out of stock on maximas, any other good places to look?

Of those, I know Sharky's definitely sells clams and gets rave reviews. Maximas seem hard to come by these days. Anyone know why?

I read somewhere that they where really over sold, and that they will have a good selection in about 7-8 months. Maybe I should get a derasa.

My LFS has had a tougher time lately getting Maximas as well. Good luck.

Ya, from what I have read on the clams direct forum, the farmers over sold the maxies last year and it is going to take a year or two to replenish them.

I spoke with Barry from Clams Direct over the phone recently. He told me that Two of the major Maxima farms went out of business when they lost their grants. The remaining famrs shipped out what they had...but all the captive reared/aquacultured Maxima's are very small, (around an 1 inch). And if he see's a Maxima larger than that, its not aqua-cultured....

I'm sure some of it has to do with the FL hurricanes and ORA as well.

Good info. all, thanks.

My LFS has had two very nice 4" - 5" Croceas that I picked up. $90 for both, a real steal!

I appreciate all the help guys, but I think I might wait it out a few more months until Clams Direct or one of the other reputable suppliers get some bigger ones. Due to what I've heard, being that smaller clams can be more difficult to sustain. I know there is never a guarantee but I would rather pay a little more for a bigger clam that may have a better chance of survival. But thanks again for the help.

Same thing I've been informed of.
No one will be selling farm raised maxima's for at least 6 months or so.

FWIW ORA is pretty much back on track from what I've seen AFA fish go. Still building backup on corals. Their clams come in from the Pacific anyways so the hurricanes didn't really affect the clams from what I understand.

FWIW,
When I spoke to Barry on the phone, I mentioned that I liked the Maximas alot and wasnt as wild about Croceas. Barry told me that Croceas are hardier in his experiance than Maxima's which wasnt something I was aware of. BArry says he might lose one Cracea to every 4 Maxima's he loses in shipping...

So maybe you should look into a Crocea?

As far as the smaller ones go...you just need to feed them...thats why their more difficult. Mount them to a piece of rock or better yet and old clam shell when you first get it in your tank. Get a bowl of tankwater and dose phytoplankton...put the clam in the bowl and let it sit for about 20-30 minutes. When the water is clear, you've fed the clam.

Lather, rinse, repeat a day or two later.....

That's good to know Maxx! Can't say I would have ever thought to put them in a bowl to feed!

Good idea Maxx, much appreciated! I have heard as well to cut the top off a 3 liter bottle put it over the clam and squirt the phyto in. How effective is this method?

That is effective too..but now you are introducing something with high levels of phosphate (Phytoplankton) to your tank. Phospate is tough on corals and encourages algae growth. This is why people suggest (just about freaking demand in some places) that you soak frozen food in Ro/Di water and strain it through a brine shrimp net to ditch the now phospahte laden water. (Phosphates are used as preservatives in most foods sold these days). So putting the clam in a bowl where it can be fed w/o introducing the phyto to the tank is preferred over the soda bottle top. You can do it either way, one way just seriously lessens the amount of phosphates you're adding to your tank.
