| Plate Coral | Clam or no clam? As you know, I've recently started a 10g nano. It's been running for about a month now, with no serious problems. It will soon have it's 2x65 (Actinic Blub and 67K) and I was wondering if it would be possible to have a Maxima in there? If I am able to get a clam, how many would it be possible to have? Does anyone have a good link to caring for clams and such...? Thank you,

| Rabid Wolverine Reefer ![]() | id say no to a clam,,,first, your tank is to young, second maximas are light hungry clams and you dont have enough, if you really, really want a clam id say go with a derasa,,,but issue three comes in,,,they are fast growing and will out grow a 10g in no time and also it would be hard to maintain calcium levels is a 10g. these are my thoughts,,,,

| Manta Ray ![]() | David, I hate to say this to you, but Witful is right. Your tank is too new and you dont have enough light or room for a clam that doesnt need alot of light. I would wait until you have larger tank (maybe 20 or 30 gallons), better (more) lighting and your tank is more mature. Its annoying , I know. But its better off in the long run. Lets get some more experiance under your belt, and let your tank mature a bit more rather than set you up for an bad experiance. Nick

| Plate Coral | Alright, I was just wondering because one of the LFS's near me is getting a new shipment of clams in, and will be selling some Maxima's for $25.00 Canadian. I know, I know...just because there is a sale doesn't mean I have to go out and buy it just for the sake of buying it ![]() BTW, thanks for getting back to me...

| Manta Ray ![]() | David, For me the hard part is NOT buying something I really, really, even though I know my tank isnt ready for it, or I dont have the right set up for it. Case in point...one of my favorite LFS has a beutiful lime green gigantea carpet. They are fairly rare out here in the midwest, and this one actually looks healthy. My tank isnt ready for it, even though I really want it...I have to pass. Its better for the animal in the long run, and I wont get frustrated if the animal doesnt survive. Its hard, but someties doing the right thing isnt easy. OKay...I'll get off my soapbox now. Sorry for the morality lesson. Nick

| Neon dottyback | Barry of www.clamsdirect.com/phpbb2/ advises no clam be added before the at the very least 6th month, preferrably 9 month of a tanks life. I really agree with the others here, a clam and especially a T. maxima will not survive under that lighting. Maxima and crocea clams need the most intensity as they are lighting needy. So with lighting and the youthful age of your tank I'd say please wait for the clams sake and until better lighting can be used.
