Too much light?

Have a crocea near the top of the tank (about 4" from the waterline) under 2x150 watt 10000K MH and 2x130 watt sunpac PCs. These are hanging about 8" above the water and my tank is uncovered. It has attached firmly and looks fine until the MHs kick on for a while and it shies a bit. I thought I'd see if the general opinion would be to try to move it down or leave it and see if it "gets used to it". I don't want to raise the lights and screw up the rest of the tank. Everything else seems happy with the lighting situation.

Re: Too much light?

Not an expert, but I will chime in until they show up.

If it's attached, DON'T try to move him. You will tear the foot and he will slowly die.
Just shying a bit when the lights come on is pretty normal, mine react to any light change (including fish swimming over them).

If it is truly unhappy he will detach and move. Just make sure he isn't in a position to fall! They can injure themselves and cause severe injury or death.

Again just my 2 cents.

Re: Too much light?

Thanks. I was thinking the same. He is really attached firmly and putting out even more threads. I had two of clams for couple of years (crocea and derasa) and must have added a parasite of some sort when I added a third (maxima)... All three died quickly. I did not see any snails and I had no water parameter changes.

I guess I am being paranoid about any change I see...

I think he is fine were he is. If he wants to move, he will. Just watch him closely so that he does not fall off.

Re: Too much light?

It has been opening up more... I shortened the MH time by a half hour in the morning and a half in the evening and overall, all of the corals seem happier... especially my black sun coral.

Re: Too much light?

The closing quickly when the lighting changes is a good sign and one way to tell if the clam is healthy or not. Run your hand over the clam creating a shadow. If it closes quickly it is fine, if it is slow there is a problem. On the same token, it should open back up relatively quickly. If these are new lights you may need to acclimate the clam slowly using vinyl screen material. The lights are not to intense for the clam once it is acclimated to them. I agree on not trying to remove the clam.

Re: Too much light?

I would leave it be. Plus if you try to move him, you could tear his foot causing certain death.

Re: Too much light?

It seems much happier now. Sometimes having the patience to leave things be is the hardest thing to do. Thanks for all the input.

Re: Too much light?

Off Topic, but are there any snails that can be kept in a tank with clams? I would like to have one in the future, but I have some nasarrius snails, and some Margharita snails in my tank. Are these safe with clams?

Re: Too much light?

It is doing great now. It has even turned a little and is at a really cool angle where you can see the phosphorescence pretty well. Thanks.
