Crocea has a shorter lifespan?

I was told by the LFS guy that crocea has shorter lifespan as compared to maxima, is that true?

Re: Crocea has a shorter lifespan?

lol, well then he should write a book and submit his findings for peer review. Tridacna crocea or maxima lifespan is unknown. currently best geusses are 8-200+ years.

lol.. haha.. thats why i was sceptical of what he told me.. Do you think that what he mean was that crocea is less hardy?

Re: Crocea has a shorter lifespan?

I thought croceas are easier to keep than maximas? Not sure it's because they're "hardy" or just need less light requirements though. Having said that, I've kept both but have more success with maximas, especially ones with blue/green mantles. go figure?

Re: Crocea has a shorter lifespan?

Crocea's are actually known for a short lifespan in captivity. 2+ years in many cases.

Re: Crocea has a shorter lifespan?

In captivity would be the key there though I have known people who have kept them longer. In fact I have one that I have had for just over 2 yrs.
In the wild they live much much longer and get a whole lot bigger than in our tanks.

Re: Crocea has a shorter lifespan?

i dont know of any work that has been done to even attempt a real geuss at how long they live in captivity or the wild. most tanks only last about 2 years themselves, before an upgrade or take down. i have two clams right now, croceas, that are about 4 years old, both will be at 4yrs in my tanks in sept. have a couple maxima too, but the oldest is only about a year old.

on which one is easier or hardier, i dont have a clue, but like slakker said croceas are more light ddemanding. perhaps its the age of the clam that is more of a factor in how hardy they are. older/bigger clams adapt to capivity well compared to younger/smaller ones.

too bad hobbyst are the only ones that really want to know. clam farmers only care if they live long enough to sell
