| Midas Blenny | What went wrong? So I have wanted a clam forever and purchased one a few months ago. The clam was doing well and then one morning when I got up the clam was gaping and half of it was gone. Does anyone know what might have eaten it? It was placed under 400w halides about 8 inches from the surface of the water on a rock. The only thing that I can think of is my flame angel, but it happened at night. Any suggestions? |

| Brunt of all Jokes~ ![]() | Re: What went wrong? 8'' from a 400 w mh? clams take a long time to die from all manner of things, I may be very very wrong but 8'' from a 400 might of been too much? |

| Tridacna maxima | Re: What went wrong? Peppermints are notorious clam killers. Even skunk cleaners can pick them to death. Once it's dead it's a free for all for the flesh. Having said that, I have one peppermint and four cleaners that leave my clam alone, but there have been many posts here where shrimp have killed clams, and they are in every clam book as possible clam predators. That may be it. But as Squatch said, it may have been to much light and got cooked.

| Excellent Guesser :D | Re: What went wrong? What was the time line on the whole process? I don't know if it would matter on that light. Just seems like alot of watts hitting that clam. Hopefully someone with more experience will chime in.

| Brunt of all Jokes~ ![]() | Re: What went wrong? Im guessing this was a maxima clam as you had it on rock, I think there light requirements are less than crocea's as there found as deep as 45 feet, Ive had mine under vho's for a long time and they do fine, frankly the shrimp seem to sense dying matter, Ive got 5 and they never even look at the clams |
