Re: Peppermint Shrimp Pestering Clam....

No. The shell is open about 3/4 inch, the mantel is retracted and no reaction to light.

Re: Peppermint Shrimp Pestering Clam....

Can all this be possible from one shrimp... or am I missing something?

I've only had it for 2 days, and again it looked and acted perfectly until that shrimp got a hold of it.

As far as water quality is concerned.. I check, and then check it again both before I added it and then again last night... all seems good.

Re: Peppermint Shrimp Pestering Clam....

Dang it! That is very odd for it to decline so quickly. Even with the shrimp. There has to be something we are missing. Good light... umm, calcium.. hmm, uh, temp? Ph stable? Dosing anything? Alk balanced with the calc? Just some things to check for next time and for the other critters.

Re: Peppermint Shrimp Pestering Clam....

personally....it was the shrimp

lighting (strong or weak) and any within a wide range of water quality wouldnt make a clam kick it in a day.

it was harassed to death. good chance it had innards ripped out and suffered internal mortal injury.

Re: Peppermint Shrimp Pestering Clam....

Well, I appreciate all the help fellas.... I took the shrimp back to the same LFS that I bought the clam from.... Wouldn't you know it.. He gave me a replacement clam for free!!! We picked what seemed to be the healthiest clam of the bunch.

PH, Nitrates, Nitrites, Cal, Alk, Temp.... all seem to be in order. Now that the shrimp is deep sixed... Let see what happens!

Thanks again,
Chris

Re: Peppermint Shrimp Pestering Clam....

Sorry to hear that. Sometimes these things just happen and we never are able to pin-point the reason. Hopefully this one will fare MUCH better.

Keep us posted and Good luck Chris

Nitrate (NO3) reduction is directly proportional to percentage of Water Change.
Allen's home-made formula...(-NO3=WC%)
This means if you change 50% of your total water volume (That's EVERYTHING) you'll get a net reduction of (NO3) somewhere around 50%.

Ask me about how to increase your REEF budget without going without FOOD!!
