Derasa Problem...

Well, it's not really a problem but any of you guys own derasas and notice the growth rate on that thing? It's uncanny. IF you maintain your water quality and lighting...there's no reason that thing can't outgrow your tank. I'm running out of room on the rock and I'm about to place him on the substrate...if I can find a place for him.

Re: Derasa Problem...

That's great Kyrie! I went to a talk by James Fatheree at MACNA and he said that there is great deal of genetic diversity within each species of clam. He said that within a species you can find super fast growers and super slow growers. You must have gotten a hardy, super fast grower. Of course your husbandry skills are a big part of it too!

Re: Derasa Problem...

Be careful when removing him from the rock if he is attached to it. You can severely damage the clam. Sometimes they can be persuaded to unattach and often once they get big they no longer attach. Just be careful.

Re: Derasa Problem...

I love derasas; they really are beautiful. As a matter of fact, I'm considering removing my biowheel. Since I started using RO/DI water; the readings have been pretty positive. Derasas absorb nitrates and ammonia; improving your water quality before they get out of control.

If you want to see a pretty nice picture of one of my clams, I think there's one in my folders on this website.

The only picture I see in your gallery is of a Crocea clam, not Derasa.

It's a derasa. My PC lights aren't strong enough to support Croceas.

Re: Derasa Problem...

Then that picture in your gallery has been doctored or is misleading. Derasa clams are brown-golden-yellow and is covered in a pattern of stripes with a hint of blue on the edge of the mantle.

Once again, you're mistaken since I don't have the software to modify a picture but rather a very good digital camera. In addition, I have 3 derasas AND they are not confined to only brown-gold-yellow like you say. I know this because, I do in fact have a "brown-gold-yellow" one also. Keep in mind that it's not "colour" that determines the clam.

If I did in fact have a crocea...it'd be dead within a week since my lights aren't that strong. If you got your information off of marinecenter.com, then I'm proud to say to you that it's wrong like a ton of other misinformed literature on that website.
