| Tridacna maxima | Re: Recommended lighting. I have a beautiful tridacna under 150w MH in a 21" deep 75g. He's probably about 24" from the light in 16" of water. That's about maximum depth under this light to have a clam THRIVE IMO. Calcium is also very important for clams. Remember, clams require high intensity light as most live in shallows under full sun. A tank deeper than mine would need 250w MH or move the clam closer to the surface, but I think MH is necessary for them to thrive.

| Pistol Shrimp | Re: Recommended lighting. I know the Intensity plays a big factor but would mine lighting being at 215W T5 be strong enough or would a MH be more sufficient.

| Tridacna maxima | Re: Recommended lighting. P.S. when purchasing a clam, buy only aquacultured not wild caught specimens, and wave your hand over the clam producing a shadow to induce a retraction response. If it doesn't close or is slow, don't buy it, it's not healthy.

| Tridacna maxima | Re: Recommended lighting. Absolutely! It's almost identical to what I have. Also remember clams like certain surfaces for their bottoms to rest on, some like sand while some like rock so research a little before you get one. crocea stay small (6") and like hard surface derasa's get big (18") and tolerate both surfaces gigas get huge! 4+ FEET, but are less demanding of intense light since many are found in deep water. maximas get to 16" and like hard surfaces Squamosa's get to 16" and need firm surface, not sand

| Neon dottyback | Re: Recommended lighting. T. crocea, and T. maxima are the most lighting needy clams and are rock dwellers. I would only try to keep these clams under metal halides. They do require the intensity of that lighting. T. derasa and T. gigas are sand bed dwellers and are a lesser lighting dependant clam.
