| Brunt of all Jokes~ | Re: clam rolled over? When a clam expels water it can be very powerfull, you should have a flatish piece of lr or another half shell for the clam to attach to, this guy needs a firm substrate, sometimes the lfs will stick them in the sand so they are easily removed for sale, the bissel foot your seeing is normal thats what it will bind to the surface with. | Golden Moray | Re: clam rolled over? Steve, I am surprised you didn't ask Victor if he was ok....lol... Anyway, yes the clam should have something under him as Steve said. Sometimes the LFS's fail to tell us this. I hope your clam is ok, he should be fine.

| Midas Blenny | Re: clam rolled over? Thanks, I think I'll use a half shell or small flatish rock. I don't really want to let it attach to a large piece of live rock because then I may want to move it and won't be able to! Are they happy low or high in the tank (mine is a 24" d 90 gal but on 19" water, DSB) I think I see them mostly put on the bottom of tanks. |

| Sunshine Reefer ![]() | Re: clam rolled over? What kind of clam is it and what is your lighting? That will make the difference on where you put it. The type of clam will also determine if it should go in the sand or on a rock. Crocea for example is a rock dwelling clam and will be much happier on a rock higher in the tank. It doesn't have to be one of your big rocks. You can let it attach to a shell or piece of flat rock and then move the small rock up onto your rockwork. The way it is laying it looks to me like it could have been knocked over. Sometimes fish or even snails can knock them over if they have not attached. Also they can move on their own. I have a small maxima that got knocked over by somebody (probably a turbo snail) and so far I have not found it's sweet spot yet. Pretty much every morning when I look at the tank it has moved.

| Midas Blenny | Re: clam rolled over? Unfortunatly I don't know the type of clam, I know shouldn't buy if you don't know what you're buying but my LFS had a going out of bus. sale so I took the clam home. I was hoping you can tell by the pics. It seems to be doing ok, I'm in process of setting up a cal. reac. which should help it and SPS w/calc needs. |

| Sunshine Reefer ![]() | Re: clam rolled over? I certainly can't tell from the pics and according to the book I am reading it can be very difficult to truly tell the difference in many cases. Knowing the type of clam can make a big difference in care but regardless of the clam they are light loving animals. What kind of lighting do you have? Light is much more important to a clam than anything else including Calc since the zoanthella in the clam's mantle feed off of the light and then turn around and feed the clam. Clams do some filter feeding but their primary food source is the relationship with the zoanthella. I can look at the id info in my book when I get home but I would need to see pics of the mantle and the top of the clam as well before I could even make a guess. Perhaps somebody with more experience can tell.

| Sunshine Reefer ![]() | Re: clam rolled over? See those are the peeps we need on this one. A pic of the mantle can help too if you can get a clear one. The color doesn't make a difference in what type but there are eye patterns and other id clues there. I'd have to get the book out to remember what all to look for and we have several really good clam people here. Victor, I hope you didn't hurt yourself. Just spit out the sand. You should be fine.
