clams and aptasia

Ok i have this clam, in the 5.5 (old pic)

theres an apsasia growing on the side of it....
is it ok to remove the clam from the water for a min or 2 (proble like 25 seconds) scrape the apteasia off with a razor, and replace it?

Re: clams and aptasia

I would keep the clam in a shallow bowl of tank water and scrape the aiptasia off under water. Clams can get potentiall dangerous internal air bubbles. There is a way to 'burp' the clam underwater to releive the bubbles but I forget how...

Re: clams and aptasia

I would be very worried about Joe's that close to a clam but clams in the wild routinely spend time out of the water. I guess A small bowl would be a good idea for the extra insurance but I would seriously worry about the Joe's.

Re: clams and aptasia

I believe those air bubbles form when in supersaturated conditions such as pouring hot water into cool water when making baths for acclimating inverts. This doesn't usually happen when you simply remove the Clam and expose him to air.

Re: clams and aptasia

clams can be kept out of water long enough to do removal of an aiptasia or to even just check for pyramids or a general overall health check. It's when placing them back in the tank they should be burped. This is done by gently swishing the clam back and forth and letting any trapped air come out. Also when a clam is removed from water they should be held sideways so the weight of the mantle is not forced down towards the bottom of the clam.

Re: clams and aptasia

i got the big ones in the tank early the boiling water trick worked great.

but theres still a small one in the clam I will have to try ageain later. its hard

cause its in between the little spike/shelf's that are on the side of the shell.

Re: clams and aptasia

burning, those are called shutes and I can only imagine thats a hard place to get to. You might think about using lemon juice too, its perfectly fine for aiptasia.
