New Clams

Ok so I have the two little guys. I believe there still small enough to need regular feedings of phyto. My question is how often should this be done? everyday? twice a week?............. Can you overfeed?

Re: New Clams

Phyto breaks down like everything else in our tanks so yes you can overfeed. It would be more of a water quality thing though.
I fed mine every other day when it was small. Now I don't even bother though my tank is generally overfed.

Re: New Clams

I would suggest in feeding smaller clams that it be done every 2-3 days. Try to make it like 3 times a week. That should be good unless you see they starting to loose some color, then you should step up the feedings.

Re: New Clams

Cool!
Did you buy the little guy, or did he just turn up one day?
I guess that in your' "big tank" you're right, and he doesn't need feeding. So, I have to ask, just how big is your' "big tank"? I've only got a "little" 90 gallon. I have to scrape the front glass at least once a week, is this often enough for a little guy like him (I ask, 'cause I've got a clam about 2" long)?
Are the big guys REALLY O.K. without at least some feeding? It'd be really nice to stop pouring the DTs' in daily! My set-up is about 10 years old, so I'd say that I've got a mature tank. Thanks!

Re: New Clams

I don't feed mine but I do overfeed my tank. They are both doing great with noticable new growth and great mantle coloring.

Re: New Clams

Clams over the size of 2-2.5" are ok to do without feeding. By that time the surface of the mantle is large enough to feed the clam. Smaller than 2" and the mantle area is not sufficient to help the clam feed itself through lighting alone. Live phyto is the very best to use in feeding small clams.

Re: New Clams

i have 5 clams in my 120. the snallest is close to 2 inches and the biggest is at 4 inches. never feed them except when i feed my tank. i use rod's food which is for all your livestock. it's an all in one food for your reef.

Re: New Clams

Seems like I remember someone saying they removed their small clam and placed it in a bowl of tank water. Then put the phyto in the bowl. After a little while of feeding they returned the clam and discarded the bowl of water. I guess this would solve issues of overfeeding the tank. But has always seemed like too much work to me. I'm a lazy reefer, I steer clear of anything that needs target feeding.
