Actually he'll have all the light he needs soon. I'm going to be building a 250W MH in a few weeks. A friend of mine is an electrician and gets great prices on all the supplies.

Awesome! Be sure to acclimate your tank to the new lights. I used several layers of window screen and removed a layer at a time as things adjusted. Some people raise the light higher and slowly lower it and others reduce the photo period and gradually increase. Just be sure you do something to acclimate or you may burn your corals.

yea I've read about that. How do I know how much to block? What will I see if too much is let through too soon?

Re: I really want a clam!

Well ideally you block it to the point that your corals are getting slightly more light than they were before. I think we used 3 layers of window screen when we went from PC to MH w/PC. Then every water change we removed a layer. I should have gone more slowly since I was doing weekly water changes at the time. I lost several anemones believe it or not.
If it is too much light then things will start to bleach and/or generally look unhappy. Then back up a step.

Re: I really want a clam!

with the 250w halides then this maxima will definitely get rid of the central midline bleaching it has. Thats awesome. It does have nice even mantle extension. When a clam begins to need more light then they are getting they will hyper-extend their mantle. So far this clam certainly is not doing that. Be sure and watch the clam when you do get the new lights. It will definitely need to be acclimated over to the increased lighting.

And watch for any of your other corals touching the maxima. Clams are funny and don't like being touched. We{Clamsdirect}just had someone loose a crocea due to a frogspawn touching it.

Re: I really want a clam!

since the screens can be tough, i acclimate by adjusitng the photo period.
One hour on in the mornign and then one at night, the rest of the day is just PC's/
then after a week i add an hour to each , so 2 in the am and 2 in the pm, and after a few weeks they meet in the middle and everoyne is happy
good luck

Cool, that sounds like the easiest way. I wasn't aware that you could hit them with the full light of the MH for a short peroid of time like that.
Thanks

Re: I really want a clam!

Hi Woolfe, I just found this thread. How are those babies doing now? Did you get the MH's? If so, how is the breaking in period going? I'll be changing to MHs soon and then a clam may follow, so keep me posted on your tank. All your corals look sooo happy! Great job!

Re: I really want a clam!

The clams are doing fine with the current lights. The MH project had to be put on hold for a little while. The engine in my truck blew and had to be replaced. That's where all my extra $ had to go.

You chose that over new lights? You're priorities are ALL messed up!

Amazing pics! Makes me want a clam only tank like one of those "zero edge" tanks! What lights do you currently have over them?
