I do clean most of it off the glass. The overflow is the best place to see it untouched.

No kidding. If you are able to keep all of that coral alive and well, a clam should be easy. It will make a nice centerpiece.

Re: I really want a clam!

I would suggest any of the lower lighting clams like squamosa, derasa as they are very nice clams and some have really great mantle patterns. The higher lighting needy clams like crocea and maxima are rock dwellers and should be kpet under halides for the intensity of the lighting.

Your sand bed looks to me like it's all ready for a clam or 2.

Re: I really want a clam!

Seriously though. I am going shopping. I've looked at a ton of pictures since yesterday and it seems the ones I really shouldn't try are the brighter colored ones. Is this accurate? I don't want to go to the LFS without knowing how to tell them apart myself. I don't like to rely on the LFS guy very often or for expensive purchases. Is there another way to tell the difference besides the color? I need to get a laptop so I can bring you guys with me. I'll be like Oh really? that crab wont eat my mushrooms? We'll just see about that as I flip out my laptop & start typing..... LMAO

Re: I really want a clam!

Check this out. Crocea clams 2-3 inches $17.99. Can't vouch for the quality of this distributor though.

Re: I really want a clam!

Crocea clams are the halide needing species though. The only 2 species that are going to work under your lighting are the derasa and squamosa. The derasa has slick sides to the shell and the squamosa has shutes or things that stick out on the sides of the shell. The reason they are the lower lighting clams is due to their color patterns. They range in a whole variety of browns to golds to blue rims and green rims around the mantle.

Re: I really want a clam!

OK here they are. I'm not sure that the blue rimed one is real happy where I put him. He's open but not all the way. I think I'm going to try to rearrange a few things and put him higher. Should I make/find a shelf area and put some sand under him? The blue one is only about 4" deep in the tank. Let me know what you think!
