Filtration For 75 gallon predator

Hey all. I have been reading up on many different forms of filtration in the past few months but i am still concerned about what kind of filtration is best for a 75 gallon Predator tank.

As of right now, I plan on (maybe) adding these fish slowly and in this order. (maybe a few months spread)

1st off-Snowflake eel.
2nd-trigger fish (don't know the type yet)
3rd-Dragon wrasse
4th-ghost eel
5th-2 dwarf lions

Thats about all the fish I want to keep.

I am wanting to have a 2-3" sand bed in the tank for the eels to bury in and for filtration purposes--(pink Fiji live sand)

Wanting to have about 60lbs of live rock for them to hide in and also for biological filtration??(may add more)

Then an internal overflow--leading to a sump/(maybe fuge) with a heater and Red Sea C-Skim 1200 skimmer..

I don't want to invest a lot of money in this and not have top notch stuff...
Please share your thoughts on filtration for my soon to be tank.

Thanks all!

Im not a expert but you might be pushing it with only a 75 gallon tank. Your going to need a monster of a filter system to clean up just there waste. I know a lot of people go bare bottom on Predator tanks so there easy to clean. Well like I said I am still new myself so good luck and your in the right place for info.

I think the snowflake eel and then one lion and one trigger would be cool depending on which ones you pick.

As others pointed out, I would consider the tank too small for all the fish you want, but it would work for fewer fish.

My choice would be a FOWLR system, using a berlin type sump. I would also use a much larger skimmer, since these fish do generate a lot of waste.

However, this is still going to be a somewhat expensive project, no matter what you go with. I recommend that you always buy the best possible equipment. It will cost more up front, but it will last, and parts will be available, and it will work better. In the long term, top quality equipment has the lowest total cost of ownership.

Re: Filtration For 75 gallon predator

Yes, I agree that this should be a FOWLR system. A berlin sump? okay i will have to do some research on this..

I honestly am not sure of the fish that I plan to put into this system. The only one that i am for sure of is the snowflake eel.

If this skimmer is not sufficient, (I thought that it was one of the best on the market) what one would you suggest?

As far as the berlin sump-- Isn't this considered a "Nitrate factory?" I do know that I want the best for this set-up.-- as it will be cheaper and far better in the longrun IMO.

Thanks

Re: Filtration For 75 gallon predator

You cant put a trigger is with lions, especially dwarf lions. They will nip at their fins until they eventually kill them. I have a 125 gallon, & the most I had in my tank is 1 puffer, 1 voltian lion, & a wrasse. That is almost to many fish for a 125. You really need to research your fish more, you should never put a lion with a trigger. Not trying to burst your bubble, but with the more aggressive fish that grow larger very fast, it's a big gamble & I wouldnt risk the fish's life over it. With a 75 I would say no more than 2 fish that you research the adult size, aggression, etc. first and 1 eel. Sorry, just love my aggressive tank and realize how less choices you have.

Re: Filtration For 75 gallon predator

Well I did read somethings about triggers and lions not getting along, but i have also read other contrary descriptions. I have done my research for the most part-just not sure on what ones to get. The snowflake is the main one I want. Above was more of a "wish-list" of fish that I would want, not an "Im going to get"

snowflakes are great ... they keep to themselves not too aggressive ... that said you wont see them til feeding time. The odd one might stick its head out of the rocks, but like mine 20 " long she darts back when anyone swims close. I feed mine silversides with long tongs she grabs it and disappears.

Since your on a budget - why not try a AquaC Remora Hang on protein skimmer with the 1200 maxijet pump ($160) with say a Aquaclear 70 hang on filter ($60). With the live sand it should be OK and add some live rock as you go.

Re: Filtration For 75 gallon predator

We have a 75 gallon tank as well and have successfuly kept a picasso trigger and dwarf lion along with a snowflake eel (been around 8 months now) All 3 of those fish eat like pigs so you will need a good filter. We use the remora hang out skimmer and a fluval 405 cannister filter.
