Antennata or Zebra??

Hi. It's my first post here, and I wanted to ask which lion fish ya'll thought I should get. I have a 55 gal., fish only tank with the following fish:

3" spiny box puffer
2" yellow tail damsel
2" Valentini puffer
3" Fox face
2.5" tomato clown
medium sized atlantic anemone

I really want to get a dwarf lion fish, and then stop adding fish. Liveaquaria.com has the Antennata and Zebra, and specify a maximum adult size of 7" for each. I would be buying a small one (2"). I know the puffers can nip, but I have never seen mine nip at any other fish. They keep to themselves. The damsel may become lion food over time, so I may move him out.

As far as the lion goes, which is more hardy, easier to feed, prettier (in your opinion), and better suited for my tank?

Re: Antennata or Zebra??

I'm a new guy here, and just wondered if anybody had any thoughts or opinions on my tank and/or fish (see post above). I have a 55 gal with (2) 300gph HOB filters with biowheel. I have a protein skimmer and no live rock.

I think the lion would be too much fish for your aquarium. In fact, I believe the puffer will outgrow the 55 gallon. You should probably reconsider your stocking plan or get a much larger tank.

Re: Antennata or Zebra??

I believe Woodstock had an Antennata. It was adorable but I really know nothing about keeping one. I would get some LR in the tank and be very diligent about maintenance and water changes. The fish you have produce a lot of waste that needs to be dealt with.
I do agree that you have too many large fish in a small tank. I would either keep one puffer or the dwarf lion.

Re: Antennata or Zebra??

Thanks for your posts. I won't hesitate to move a fish out when they get too big, or when the nitrates increase too much. My LFS will readily buy fish from me. I actually caught the spiny box puffer in the shrimp net last year, so I could sell him for a proffit if I wanted. The problem is that my daughter is totally in love with lion fish, so I will have to make that the highest priority. I am currently purchasing a variety of tank cleaners (hermet crabs, snails, etc) to help with the messy eater problem. I will be very dilligent with vacuuming and cleaning and testing. Thanks again for your advice and I welcome further comments.

Re: Antennata or Zebra??

Dendrochirus zebra is as easy to keep as a Volitan, but Antennatas are definitely more difficult.Stick with the dwarf.
