Arrow is it true?

is it true that if i find a tank with coralline algae all i have to do is scrape some off, put it in my tank then wait a while and then i will start seeing a lot of coralline? i read somewhere that the only way it can grow in a tank is if it has been introduced??????
thanks

Re: is it true?

If you scrape the coralline off of a rock in a strong stream of water, it will spread the spores very quickly. Keep in mind you will need to keep your ca/alk and po4 down to encourage its growth.

Re: is it true?

If you do not intentionally introduce it, It will eventuall grow from coral frags, rocks, etc that you place in the tank.

If you want it to grow, add some spores

yes, a good way is cherry picking a piece of live rock with a good variety of different coralline algaes, or reef rubble is also a good seed

Re: is it true?

In small quantities, adding live rock will not cause a spike. In large quantities, though, the amount of die off from the new rock could definitely trigger a new mini-cycle of sorts. I wouldn't worry about the corraline, though, with maturation and good water quality/calc and alk levels, you'll have more than you could ever want in no time.

Re: is it true?

(was being diplomatic...I just really hated that clown...I bet if we tried a poll, my avatar would get a thumbs down...not that I would change it....well, maybe...lol). It wouldn't really take too much, maybe 1 pound or less of really purple LR....
