Lionfish owners! Have a question!!

Well I was cleaning the glass right now and the lionfish thought the paper towel was food so he attack the glass and smashed his head right in the glass. Now he is bright dark red! Extremely dark red! Never seen him that color before. Just want to know if this is normal??

Re: Lionfish owners! Have a question!!

Well he's back swimming. But he is swimming like he's confused. Okay now he's back on the sand. I think he'll be okay. He's pretty strong, if he went 2 weeks without eating then I'm sure he can deal with a bruise. It's quite funny how I'm the only one on this board who has problems like this.

Good... Sounds like he will be okay

I think Leo (my lion) would jump out of the tank at me if I didn't feed him for 2 weeks.

Yeah that was when I first got him for christmas. The lfs was feeding him live food. I think he was just mad at me for sort of teasing him when I was cleaning the tank. He just flared up lol.

Re: Lionfish owners! Have a question!!

Sorry to hear about your fish, I hope it is ok. Maybe next time you can place your net in the tank and use it to block his view or just to scare him back.

A long strip of plexiglass can be a useful tool when keeping lionfish. Use it as a barrier between your hand and the fish when working in the tank (or in your case, use it to keep the fish away from the glass while you are working outside the tank). Personally, I won't put my hand in a tank with certain fish (like lionfish) without a spotter/helper. Someone who can keep an eye on the fish, maybe help keep it away. Also it is good practice to have someone else around when working with any dangerous animal, in case of injury.

Re: Lionfish owners! Have a question!!

He seems fine now. Still has that dark red color to it. Thanks for the advice about the plexi glass but I always use my bare hands and never gotten stung by one yet.

Yes Lion's can get darker in color, when they get "upset".

Re: Lionfish owners! Have a question!!

Looks like he lost some coloring right under his dorsal spines. It's a pale color. But seems ok.

The operative word there being, yet. Don't wait to implement safety measures until you have an accident or close call. It is kind of like waiting to wear a seatbelt until after you have had your first automobile wreck. Even with the best safety measures, accidents can happen but it is all about reducing the chance of it happening.

Anyways, glad to hear your fish is doing better.
