PC tube length?

Thanks for such a big warm welcome to reefsanctuary!

I want to upgrade from NO to PC, tank is 48" long and holds 75gal. the NO fixture I have now is 48" with 2 - 40watt tubes; do I buy 48" length PC fixture & tubes or are they sized differently?

Different wattage pc bulbs are different lengths, with 96 watts being the longest. Depending on what you're trying to keep in your tank, you have many options. 2x55w, 2x65w, 2x96w, 4x55,65,96, 6x55w,65,96, etc. Prices of course go up as wattages & number of bulbs increase.

A 48" fixture is going to stay a 48" fixture, despite what bulbs they house. As BoomerD mentions, PC's come in a variety of sizes, but the fixtures still come in the same standard 24", 30", 36", and 48" fixtures.

FWIW, the 36" and the 48" are usually the same setup, only with a longer reflector and housing assembly. Same goes for the 24" and the 30",

Make sure you match either the 2 pin or 4 pin configuration to you PC light sockets. It's a bummer if you get them mixed up!
