My computer or RS site?

When I post a quick reply I can type faster then it prints in the post box, and I am not a fast typer. Then when I post, it seems some of the words are missing or some letters. I have noticed this in post by other people, and thought it was just poor spelling, or bad grammar, but notice it on mine and I usually proof read and do spell check with Ispell. Can you explain?

Re: My computer or RS site?

I have had same problems, also lots of times if I'm to slow when I post it disapears, causes me to double post now and then. Unless it's real short I always use "go advanced" It gives me the time to type "my way"

Re: My computer or RS site?

I have not experienced the described problem. I have accessed RS via my Linux desktop system and via my Windows XP laptop.

I recommend you investigate the following areas of your machine.

1) Is the hardware adequate? Too slow a processor, limited memory, or a slow video card/chip can heavly contribute to slow and/or unresponsive systems.

2) Are you running any other applications? Windows loves to start a ton of other, often useless applications, that can consume a tremendous amount of system resources. Be sure to check programs that are started at boot time, that you may not know about.

3) Make sure your system does not suffer from viruses, spyware or other malware. Be sure to run an up to date virus scanner and spyware software, and scan your full system.

4) Be sure to defrag your disk. Sometimes this is needed even if the defrag program says it isn't. This is especially true for FAT and FAT32 file structures.

5) Be sure your software is up to date.

6) Be sure all your hardware is working correctly. Check the system logs for errors. If the system is doing a lot of soft error recovery, it's not running your application.

This will go a long way toward system performance.

Re: My computer or RS site?

Very good advice DaveK.

I've not had this issue in the least and I spend a lil bit of time on RS. I've got 3 different systems that I visit RS from and none of them suffer from what yall are describing.

It does "ring of" some type of resource issue which can be hardware, software or MALWARE (all of this Dave has already detailed).

One thing I like to see people use ATFCleaner.exe (only if Operating system: Windows 2003, Windows NT, Windows XP, Windows 2000, Windows 98 )

Live Rock Rubble will do the SAME thing as Bio-Balls and is NOT a suitable replacement for BIO-BALLS in a Reef System! It's ALL gotta go!!

Nitrate (NO3) reduction is directly proportional to percentage of Water Change.
Allen's home-made formula...currentNO3-((%WC*.01)currentNO3)=finalNO3 (thanks Luukosian)
This means if you change 50% of your total water volume (That's EVERYTHING) you'll get a net reduction of (NO3) somewhere around 50%.

Ask me about how to increase your REEF budget without going without FOOD!!

Re: My computer or RS site?

Blue Eyes,
not doing today, but when McAfree is doing a scan all is running slow and they did one yesterday, had Conflicker this spring, had to strip the computer of all files because did not know where it was hiding and could not go to MicroSoft for updates or McCafarree for updates, it would block that, real ugly!!!!!!! I wonder if going to some threads post if there are viruses hiden in them?

Re: My computer or RS site?

For the most part you don't have to worry about viruses on a forum like THIS one. We get few attacks because we're not a COMPUTER related website. As long as you're not clicking on links outside of here you're pretty good to go on RS!

I'd suspect you've got a virus hidden in your RESTORE files which means it's "Untouchable" with anti-virus software.

Also McCrappy isn't your best AV solution by far

Re: My computer or RS site?

Bob
System Restore (restorept.api) is a new Windows XP feature that's similar to "Last Known Configuration." However, System Restore maintains multiple restore points instead of one last restore point. The user can manually create restore points, or System Restore can keep restore points every 24hrs:

Anytime I have an infection I turn OFF System Restore and reboot my system to purge it.

Sure...

Right Click on My Computer
click on Properties
click on System Restore tab along the top of the window
put a check into the box labeled Turn System Restore OFF
click on Ok
(there may be a slight delay/lag here depending on speed of system and number of restore points so be patient)

At this point I always do a full power-down and then restart.. Keep in mind that you no longer have any "Restore Points" if you have an immediate hardware problem. Once you are SURE your system is clean and virus free you'll want to go back into this area and turn it back ON! It may save your bottom dollar some day.

Do this
"At your OWN risk!"

Re: My computer or RS site?

I know there is a few html errors on this site but that shouldn't pose any real problems but I do occassionaly get a very slow connection/download here.

I've found the free online microsoft scanner very handy if anyone is interested:

Re: My computer or RS site?

I ran into after i posted something and not seeing it, but I know it was there but wasn't showing yet for some reason. So to prevent a double post i just wait it out for couple of hours or even a day. When i do and come back to the forum I see my post.

Like I said it only happened once, so i didn't pay no mind to that. Unless it was a ongoing problem with every post. and I do use the quick reply allot since i'm familiar with most of the BBcode from using and running forums in the past.
