Giving out karma suggestion

Hey did anyone ever discuss the amt of karma given to be flat? ("flat tax" idea...) The people with ALOT of karma giving new people alot of karma leads to experienced people having to be stingy with their karma. Know what I mean?

Hey Craig suggested i make this it's own thread...

If I have 300 karma and I give someone karma they get, say 5 pts (dunno what is it really but just as an example) and if Doni has like 5000 karma she gives someone 200 karma points when she gives it out. ANd since it seems to me that the mods and staff try to answer questions for more newbies, they either wind up shooting newbies tons of karma or refraining from giving it, BUT they'd be in more of a position to judge whether the perosn is learning or not. Same with people who have a lot of knowledge.

Does this make sense?

Yes, it makes sense. I wonder if there is a way where you could add a section in the Karma area where you could choose the amount of Karma to be given. Say like, 5,10 or more points?
This is something Travis would probably have to look into. Not sure if it can be done or not.

Yes I agree whole heartedly. I like the idea of "flat rate" karma too. If it can be adjusted that would work too.

Nitrate (NO3) reduction is directly proportional to percentage of Water Change.
Allen's home-made formula...(-NO3=WC%)
This means if you change 50% of your total water volume (That's EVERYTHING) you'll get a net reduction of (NO3) somewhere around 50%.

i like that idea too. it goes both ways too. if you help the newbies out they will only give a little karma, a flat karma rate would incourage more helping out of the newbies who need the most help.

Re: Giving out karma suggestion

It does make sence that a experienced reefer or an experienced RSer would have and be able to give more Karma.
The flat karma idea is a good one for the reasons mentioned above.
Perhaps it could be used in conjustion with a karma Kap.
This would allow those with more karma and more post to give a larger amount of karma but cap it at some level like 200 or 300 points.
This way karma from the experienced means more than karma from a beginner with out causing the dilema that RS has been having with karma.

Another way would be to allow the most experienced give out levels of karma. When your karma reaches a cetain level then you can give karma out to others in various karma amounts as Gina was talking about above.

Re: Giving out karma suggestion

The Karma doesn't prove / mean anything one way or another IMO, but the little comments left are really neat....a nice way to let someone know you are thinking about them or how much something really meant to them.

Re: Giving out karma suggestion

I think everything was working just fine before. Then the karma game began with people messing with it in the mod area, Thats when i noticed things were going hay wire.
Karma has to be earned. It's a sign of respect or not, to a particular post or deed.
I am not even sure the whole karma thing is a good thing. I recently had some trouble in pm with a new member who thought i was singling him out because of his status here verses mine. It was silly really. Since i told him how silly he was being i have not seen him back since. I hate to think anyone intimidated by some karma count.

Re: Giving out karma suggestion

Frankie, that sucks. I always took karma is more kind of a "fun" thing with a sorta kinda indication of someone's experience... I like Golden's suggestion of someone reaching a level where they can decide for themselves how much to give out.

Re: Giving out karma suggestion

The karma line is gone. I think that is sad. Looking at someone's # of posts versus their karma shows me that the person regularly makes meaningful posts, not just posting a bunch of chatter. I value that!

Re: Giving out karma suggestion

I have to be honest. Being without karma now for a while and feeling the site this way has made me think twice about karma. I stated up there that i was not to keen on it anymore. But now i find it has limited me from telling people how much i appreciate there help and good nature.
Sure i could pm them and do. But it was the conveniences of a one click quick "thank you" that i liked so much about karma. Having it on display, for all to see how many times people have done this for an individual is not the point and gets a bit vane.
Sorry to beat a dead horse but i needed to voice this to the members. All the other threads on the subject are closed.

FFrankie, I think you're going to be really happy with where this ends up.

BTW I re-opened the other thread... sorry for my poor management of which threads should remain open.
