Local forums idea

Hello, I was just thinking that it would be great if there was a forum that had listings of all the states, it would be a great way for people to get in touch with other local people and spread info about new LFS or deals going on. Just a thought.

I saw club boards listed by state on another site, and thought it was stupid that it was only for clubs. If you posted something non club related it was removed. I think it would be nice to have the option for clubs and random local information to be posted in one convenient location. Hopefully someone with the power to do so will see this thread.

Yup, I see it.

I think it's a good idea in theory. Worried how it would turn out in practice. We've played host to many reef clubs, most of them don't actually use the forum to discuss, just to advertise for free. So the forum takes up space and eventually they forget to even advertise on it. You don't see them because after they're dead for a while I just pull the forums.

On the issue of forums by state, again I can see the value of that, but don't see setting up 50 new forums here with many states probably not getting used at all.

Maybe one forum with 50 threads, one for each state? Would that accomplish the objective? I think so, but it's late....

Oh- and before Squatch and Cougra jump me, yes, I think including Canadian provinces as well would be a GREAT idea!

Sounds like an interesting idea. One forum and seperate threads for the states. Besides just letting people know about certain stores opening/closing, they could also get together for group type buys at local stores? Not sure if stores would be interested in giving discounts for large purchases but, it wouldn't hurt asking.
We could always try this and if it dosen't work pull it.

I agree, great idea! Just the other day I was thinking it would be cool if we could even view members by location to get an idea of who's local to our region. You can't do that now can you? Seems like there aren't all that many of us from the west coast. I'm all for it.

Maybe instead of by state it could be more regional?
I'm closer to reefers in Wisconsin and Indiana than I am to people in Southern Illinois.

Just an idea to keep the number of forums/threads more manageable

You could always do Regional forums to knock the # way down. Heck, make a forum for each time zone in the U.S. That should put people close enough together for short drives & cheaper overnight shipping.

Just a thought...

Yeah, all these ideas are sounding good. Never thought about the group buys thing that is a really good idea. I know most of the LFS in Colorado will do it but I hate having to drop a couple hundred before I see a price difference. The time zone thing would probably work really well to. Another option would be to set up the forums and have info on how to get your state posted, if there is little or no activity close the forum. That way the space is only being taken up by states with decent activity. If you need mods I would be more than willing to help out.
