New DEDICATED Server

Well, folks, our little Sanctuary is now all grown up. I just got off the phone with our hosting service... we've practically had a server to ourselves and we've just about sucked all the resources out of it.

What does this mean?

First, It means we're getting our very own dedicated server. A really, really good one. Here are the specs for my fellow geeks:

# AMD Athlon(tm) 64 3800+ Dual Core Processor
# 1-80GB Sata Drive
# 2048MB DDR 400 Memory
# Centos 4
# 8 ips
# 3500 GIG Bandwidth

Second, it means the cost of running this site just went up.... WAAAAAAAAAAY up. Like 10x as much.

So... I will figure out some ways to help RS bring in a bit more cash flow. One thing we will NEVER, EVER do is charge regular members to use the site. There may be a premium membership option, but all members should know that will only be an option to get more - there will be nothing taken away.

I've got a couple other ideas as well... as I said, I'll get back to you all with more info.

All in all, this is a pretty good problem to have - our growth has been explosive, and this site is a pleasure to own and maintain. Thank you all!

And now, please celebrate the blazing fastness that ReefSanctuary will soon have!

WOHOO, i love that this site is growing. i am a websurfer and when i was researching getting into this hobby there was really only one site where i could concisteantly get feedback and help and in a friendly manner, and that was here, and this is the only reef site i come on now b/c i cant stand going on the other ones. no offense to anyone but this is by far the best, and it is cause of the attitude and friendliness of all the members and staff. so thank you for making this great hobby that much better..

Very cool.

Regarding the need for additional resource to pay for all of this... I know I've barked up this tree before, but with more than 5,700 members I would think we could sell a few RS calendars. How about collecting the Photo Contest images, one for each month. Folks could feel the love every time they checked the date on the wall over their desk. We could discover what the threashold is for profitability and solicit orders/commitments prior to going to press so we're sure to make goal.

Too much trouble?

Sorry -- Having worked for 25 years in not-for-profit organizations I'm a fundraiser at heart.

Anyway -- congratulations Travis and mods. This did not happen by accident.
