RS policy update-- please read!

As the site continues to grow at an astounding pace, it is normal and healthy for policy questions and “gray area” to come up. The mods and admins will deal with each of these individually and make every effort to inform the general membership of our standing on each issue. Recently, a couple of policy decisions have been made that I’d like to share with you.

Buying and Selling

First of all, in regards to transactions made here on ReefSanctuary: This is a completely “buyer beware” situation. We highly encourage you to use caution when conducting business with fellow hobbyists. We cannot manage or police these transactions in any way. This means that disciplinary action from the RS staff is not and will not be considered as recourse for an unsatisfactory transaction. If you feel someone has not held up their end of the bargain/agreement, it is not our place to contact, warn, suspend or ban them. It is your responsibility to try to work things out in private.

The public posting of negative transactions in the vendor feedback forum is still very much in the air. While we feel it is important information to share with each other, the legal environment brings about many concerns. As admins we will have to weigh heavily the benefits of such a forum vs. the potential risks. We’ll have to get back to you on that.

Chat

Just a reminder that all aspects of the user agreement apply to the chat room. You will be held to the same standards of conduct there as you are in the forums, with the same disciplinary policy. Please give the users’ agreement a read, and remember to refrain from obscene or vulgar language. We want you to have fun in the chat room, but some people are uncomfortable with these types of discussions and we have to respect everyone who wishes to participate.

As always, we are very open to feedback and constructive criticism, either in the “Suggestion Box” forum or if you prefer, via private message.

Thanks for your time!

Buying and selling…
I appreciate being able to see negative feedback when someone has a bad run in with a vendor or a fellow reefer. I would hate to loose that part of the site. I hope the parties FIRST try to resolve things in private. Then if you get nowhere let us know without divulging private information….i.e. Real names, addresses, and the like.

Chat…
I make it a point to hold my tongue in the chat room. Sometimes things get carried away when you are having fun and chatting away with buds. I would hope that if someone is offended with anything a member posts the offended party would PM that individual and let them know. I am a rather liberal person and my views may sometimes bother people. Before you post either in a thread or chat I hope you mind other people’s beliefs and curb you self at times.

I agree that I would like to see the Vendor Feedback Forum stay. It would not only be used for bad experiences but, also for good experiences! That's one of the aspects I like about e-bay. You can check on other peoples experiences with that particular person. Then, it's your choice to buy/sell to. Just my .02.

I'd like to see a feedback forum that is separate from the vendor feedback forum. One for dealings with businesses, the other for hobbyist to hobbyists deals: trades, sales, etc.
That way, those who prefer to only buy new from an establsihed business don't have to wade thru all the "thumbs up for fishsmokingcat, good dude!" type of stuff, just to see what the experiences have been with one of the sponsors or any other on-line retailer.
Might be a bit tough to keep separated sometimes, but hey!, that's what those moderators get paid all that big money for!

BoomerD,
That's even a better idea! Usually when I do to a thread that contains alot of info I have to do a search for the particular info that I am looking for and even then you still have alot of crap to wade through.

i like the idea of separate forum for vendors/private sellers. also with the posting in the forums should be limited to "i also had a good experience" or "i also recieved damaged/broken goods" etc. posts that state such and such should happen and other blah blah blah should not be posted. keep the forum clean and simple. not a debate area and crucifixion zone.
i also strongly recommend Paypal as a funding source. it is fast and secure, no credit card required.
and most of all, as stated, buyer beware. know abit about who you are dealing with and then decide to buy/sell with them.

i say this as my best advice to a beginner. do not,,,and i repeat,,,,,DO NOT look at my tank as an example....i have a well practised eye, decades of experience, and a trunkload of failures to allow me to force the issue and get away with things most cannot~

We do this on my forum and it has worked out well, not as much traffic in the private sales/trades feedback forum, but that one has only been up about 6 months.

Oh. btw. thanks for the closure, it is nice to see an issue come up and then resolved by the administration rather than simply trying to hide it, kudos to you!!
