Any Seahorse keepers

No real question, Just wondering if any members have any seahorse tanks? I have a 29 gallon reef with 9 horse and a small fiji foxface for algae prevention.

Re: Any Seahorse keepers

I fortfy with selcon and two cubes of hikari mysis. Put them in a football shape plastic ware container. I place one of my gorganians inside for hitching post. It's funny watching all 9 try to eat at the same time.Pics will be up in couple days.

Re: Any Seahorse keepers

Feeding troughs.. I love it!! Can't wait to see the pics

The largest one is about 1.5 - 2". I catch a lot of flack around my home for keeping such critters, but I love my harlequins I have a mated pair that are super cool! I've just recently replaced the female (lost my other female several months ago to unknown causes). I had a time trying to get a female but my wonderful LFS ordered several and I was able to successfully identify/purchase a female! Whoopiee~

Re: Any Seahorse keepers

what kind of stars do you feed. I know they eat linka's but i was lucky i got them to eat chocolate chip stars. We sell them for $7.00. The one nice thing about what they eat is when they're done it turns to sand.

Re: Any Seahorse keepers

Chocolate chip stars is all i feed mine. I usually buy 2-3 at a time and keep all but one in my sump for safe keeping.

The shrimp are a bit messy. I vacuum their cave out every weekend. The 'chunks' they leave behind are hard as a rock!

Re: Any Seahorse keepers

you could try cutting one star into 3 let them grow out. It isn't quick but over time might save money. When u cut them just make sure to leave some of the middle so the live. I've heard of people cutting into 4 piece but think its too risky.

Re: Any Seahorse keepers

Approx one per month... it really depends on the size of the star.

Re: Any Seahorse keepers

Because the harleqiun shrimp eat the starfish..slowly.. while it is alive... Brooke will make a comment "ohhh the poor star fish" . So now I make sure I drop in a new starfish when she isn't around.. LOL~

~ Gotcha Doni!
Yeah, I can see that their beauty comes with a high price!
I don't think I could have sliced and diced a star either

Re: Any Seahorse keepers

Well.. I can help dress a deer, clean fish, vaccinate dogs, cats, horses, start an IV on a horse, and I have assisted in many small animal surgeries... but damn if I can cut the legs off of a star fish
