A great gift

hi, well today i got 2 seahorses as a gift. A guy from my club, got a cave in roof, end of winter go figure. Anyway he had to evacuate is stuff all over. I got the horses. He gave them to me because i have an algae tank with low flow, and nothing to harm them, my chromis wont bother them he says; and for observing all day they seem to get along fine. The chromis eats his flakes and pellets and dont boder with the mysis, so they have plenty of time to feed. My concern is with all i've red about them seem troublesome, deseases, infections and what not. And i don't know what to look for. Any pointer anyone. They seem fine by the way, just unsure . Buddy as plenty to do with caved roof poor guy, bad karma.

Re: A great gift

Congrats on the new additions. The only thing with the chromis is they may bother the seahorse in the future. They are a questionable tankmate that some folks have luck with and others don't. Remember, chromis are just another damsel.

The tank looks good. What temperature are you keeping them at? Seahorse need a temp in the 72-74 degree range.

Re: A great gift

They aren't that fragile, just meet their needs. Keep the temp in the 72-74 range, feed them daily, no inappropriate tank mates, and enjoy them. That's all there is to it.

Re: A great gift

If you can keep a reef tank, you can keep seahorse. Just need to shift gears a bit is all. Forget all the fancy reef stuff and get back to basics.

Re: A great gift

Well second day with the horses, the smaller one i actually chasing the chromis, not that he will catch him, but he seem determin to befriend him maybe. The other one is plunging into the bubble colum that i have ; riding the flow all the way to the top, he does that several time, i guess having fun. I dunno the specific behavior of horses but they seem to be playfull mates. They waste a lot of food though, any thoughts on that. i got 10 snails for that and a brittle star, do you think i should add more for that kind of waste?

Re: A great gift

One is weaker today, he's not eating like yesterday, any suggestions, i've took some food to him, with a pippette(smaller than turkey baster) and he didn't eat, the other one ate of of my hand. But one is definitally weaker, could it be the transfer, and my buddy said that he droped one of the bags on his way over......clumsy... but with that as happen to him, understandable.

Any opinions on the little guy, what are his chances?

At times he seems right up there, moving along, swiming, but at meal time thats where he's at his worse; he's much slower than the other one, he tries to feed but very lethargic for some reason. I'm worried I checked my parameters just in case; all nominal, 75 oF temp. The other one is cute he comes and stays with him for a while as a buddy and then moves on. Sad to see... He's always at the bottom when he's not moving hagging to a rock or algae.
