Smile Re: A great gift

Well just learned something today about seahorses; they have a blow hole on top of their heads, yep. Saw it in action today while feeding them, when they scoop the mysis the rejects the water through it and you see a little plume of water and i don't know, bubbles or what ever it is it makes a little white plume. really cool. I whish i could get it on camera but my camcorder is an old one and you wouldn't see that detail.

I can't give you any advice on that i'm a nooby myself; i got those by chance, i got them because a buddy of mine had to give them away now. the only thing i can tell ya is do a regular tank first, before tackling this. There's lots to be learn before doing a seahorse tank. Like a guy told me earlyer if i can do a reef tank i can do a seakorse tank, and i'm barely there so this is an experiment for me too. I happen to have a tank that my buddy said was perfect for them, thats why he gave them to me . I rely on him for advices.

The tank looks good. What temperature are you keeping them at? Seahorse need a temp in the 72-74 degree range.
I've give away my chromis, sad....he's in a good place at a friends house. but i had the time to get him out, man....turned every rock and the tank was a mess after, had to redo the whole thing lol. But thats what i liked about the little guy, full of spirit, and life, very nice to look at, such life in a small thing. My last addition to the tank new algaes.

Oh My God!!

OHHHH MYYY GODDD!!!! I think i'm in trouble. It think my Algae-seahorse tank is going into a cycle..... My nitrates just shot to 25ppm this morning. The reason it would go, is that last week i transfered, my stuff from a 10 G to this tank 20 g, disturbing the substrates. I did this to take on my friend horses, he had to leave them to some one, in an emergency, his roof caved in long story.. So he said just transfer your small tank in this bigger one and everthing will be fine, the tanks was 6 months old. So i just transfer my rocks and sand... What a fool, What am'i going to do if its the case.

Live Rock Rubble will do the SAME thing as Bio-Balls and is NOT a suitable replacement for BIO-BALLS in a Reef System! It's ALL gotta go!!

Nitrate (NO3) reduction is directly proportional to percentage of Water Change.
Allen's home-made formula...currentNO3-((%WC*.01)currentNO3)=finalNO3 (thanks Luukosian)
This means if you change 50% of your total water volume (That's EVERYTHING) you'll get a net reduction of (NO3) somewhere around 50%.

Ask me about how to increase your REEF budget without going without FOOD!!

Re: A great gift

Do water changes and use Amquel to reduce the toxicity of the amonia.

Thanks Allen , on it already mixing waiting for right oF, there's no amonia, just a rush spike in the nitrates.

Nitrates. 25ppm
Amonia 0
Phosphates 0
Nitrites 0
DK 11 ,
PH 8.1
Calcium 400
Temp 72 oF

i also found curious form of sticky, white dots all over the glass, hard to scrape off, took one under microcopes, looks like a bag of tissues, no ideal what it is, bigger ones look snail like.

Re: A great gift

Seahorses don't have teeth and don't eat algae. Perhaps he was snicking a pod off the codium and it incidentally broke the branch.

Not sure if you are aware of it or not, but that link is for an Australian company. Seahorse Sanctuary is the only place in the world right now to get CB pipefish.

Re: A great gift

Their snick is definitely strong enough to break a branch of codium.
