Question Baby pipefish help!

Hello! New here and I find myself in a slight emergency.
I recently came into possession of three Louissiana pipefish and one young Gulf pipefish. They're all wild-caught while we were collecting for a project at my job and I decided to save them from a possible future in fermaldahyde. I currently have them in a 10-gallon with grasses and some copepod-growing algae and have a batch of brine-shrimp getting ready to hatch.

I noticed that one of the Louissiana's was looking a bit swollen around the brooding pouch and since I'm pretty new to these guys I was going to rerelease him so I wouldn't have to worry about the little ones. Unfortunately I got home from class today and checked on the pipes and noticed a small, threadlike thing moving around that I assumed was random flotsam. Until it wriggled. So while I was gone Mr.Daddy gave birth to several little pipes and I have NO idea what to do. I've put some filter floss around the intake for my filter and they seem to be able to free themseles from it pretty easilly with no troubles.

A friend of mine is getting me some macroalgae this weekend that'll supply them with copepods and until then I'm going to grab a couple more things of wild algae for food. Is this a good plan and are there any suggestions with how to care for these little guys??
Thanks!!

Re: Baby pipefish help!

Most pipefish larvae require rotifers as a first food. Copepods and baby brine arr usually too large for them to eat. Also most pipefish will eat their own young so you will want to remove them to a separate tank if you are going to try and raise them.

Re: Baby pipefish help!

I realize im draggin up a dead thread here but i believe mike hellweg wrote an article explaining such things as how to breed them and care for the fry and adults, quite the informative article. That is if you still have them and are still trying to breed em. All the same give it a gander.
