| Tunicate | Hi I am looking for suggestions about specific macroalgae species to put in a seahorse tank. The algae will serve 3 purposes: (1) to "trap" added frozen mysis in the algae so the seahorses can then find and eat them (see Aquarium Design, Marine Aquariums and Coral Reef Aquarium Tank, Stand, Canopy, and Aquarium Filter System ); (2) to provide a place for the horses to hitch or hide (although I do have hitching places already);(3) to export nitrate and phosphate; (4) and perhaps to provide an area to encourage cocepod growth. Many recommend Caulerpa for seahorses, but caution about the exuberant growth of caulerpa. It seems to be a better choice for a sump. Others suggest slower growing Gracilaria or Ulva or Chaetomorpha. There are many choices for each type. In your experience, what specific macroalgae are good choices for this purpose? 40 gal; live rock; canister filtration/skimmer; 96 watt daylight or 96 watt actinide for 12 h/day. I describe my system more in the Meet and Greet section : First Post. Suggestions about LFS in Philadelphia area? |

| Golden Moray ![]() | Re: Macroalgae selection for seahorse tank? Caulerpa species are fine with seahorses. Yes they do grow fast so you need to keep them trimmed back I would suggest C. prolifera, razor caulerpa, and even grape caulerpa (both red and green). Chaeto is great for a sump but I would not put it in a seahorse tank. For me it is too tightly wound and a curious seahorses could get tangled in it. Gracilaria is also good for in tank. Ulva I have never had much luck keeping alive. I would not use it for trying to breed copepods or amphipods, the seahorses will wipe out those populations in very short order. I am over on the NJ shore so not far away. I may be able to help you out with a few starters of macroalgaes.
