I live on LBI so i can pick them up . My quarantine tank is ready i just need healthy, happy, seahorse . And i have a very friendly barbouri thats a male i met to get him a mate but, can't find one. so i spend alot of time with him. I would be grateful if anyone can help.

Welcome to RS!
Another seahorse person. Yippie! Or resident seahorse expert has recommended Seahorse Source, the ultimate place for captive bred seahorses.
I haven't gotten my new ponies yet but that is where I will go.

Well I do live in Waretown, but don't have any for sale right now. I know of a person in Barnegat that may have some available but not sure.

If you can tell me a little more about your set up I may be better able to help you find seahorses best suited for you.

It is not advisable to mix species.

Where did you obtain your current seahorses from? Are they wild caught or captive bred? Also not a good idea to mix wilds and captives together.

Do you know why you lost the one? How long have you had them?

What temperature are you keeping them at?

Sorry for all the questions, I just want to make you experiences with seahorses to be as enjoyable as possible.

Drop me a PM sometime and maybe we can get together and talk seahorses.

BTW, to Reef Sanctuarty

Welcome aboard!

Sidenote: what are the problems or repercussions of mixing wild with captive bred seahorses?

People come into our lives for a reason, a season or a lifetime. When you know which one it is, you will know what to do for that person. When someone is in your life for a REASON, it is usually to meet a need you have expressed. They have come to assist you through a difficulty, to provide you with guidance and support, to aid you physically, emotionally or spiritually. They may seem like a godsend and they are. They are there for the reason you need them to be. Then, without any wrongdoing on your part or at an inconvenient time, this person will say or do something to bring the relationship to an end. What we must realize is that our need has been met, our desire fulfilled, their work is done. The prayer you sent up has been answered and now it is time to move on.

The problem with mixing wild caught and captive bred seahorses is that wild caught seahorses harbor pathogens and bacteria that captive bred seahorses have never been exposed to therefore they have not had the chance to build up immunities to them. This can result in your captive seahorses becoming very sick and even dying.

This is also the reason you don't really want to mix species. Each species usually comes from a different geographical area thus being exposed to different bacteria/pathogens. These bacteria/pathogens can be passed amongst the species. It's basically the same as Americans going to Mexico and drinking the water, we get sick yet it has no effect on the natives.

Even mixing captive horses of the same species but from different sources is a risk for the same reasons, albeit not as much but still a risk.

Unhappy Re: just one, two , more seahorses

Thanks everyone for the welcome. I have never used a forum before . I hope this is right. I don't mind the questions ,thats how i learn. I have had my two seahorses for a year, i got them from Dan (seahorse sourse) I like him and trust him. but he has none for sale . my poor horse got the tip of its tail stuck in the pump cover. no not in the pump i have a cover over it that has holes so small the food can't get thru ,but i think she was up there eating the food and got the tip in. I now have a foam over it i hope it won't interfere with the protein skimmer but i don't want another one to go through that. they are my babies. I only want captive bred seahorses . Dan helped on my tank setup.i have a fluval canister filter, and refugium with protein skimmer. temp is 75 I only seam to have a problem with nitrate (20) i test every week and do 20% water change every two weeks. Yes, i feed to much 3 times a day.I do have a sm hermit crab, and sm brittle star the star is the seahorse taxi cab . he wraps his tail around him and goes for a ride, I am going to take pictures . sorry so long. Thanks again

Re: just one, two , more seahorses

I agree, Dan is an awesome guy. I recommend him to everyone as well as purchase my horses from him.

If you want erectus, I would suggest going with him again . I know he either has some available now or will in the very near future. I just got 2 reidi in from him about a month ago. You can't always go by his site for availability as he doesn't often get the chance to update it when batches become available.

I do know that he doesn't have barbs right now but should have erectus and reidi. Give him a call or email and see what he has. Or I could find out for you as I have to get in touch with him myself for other stuff.

The person I know of in Barnegat doesn't have any right now either.

As for your nitrates, try doing 10% water changes weekly instead of 20% every 2 weeks. It will be the same volume of water, but iy won't give the nitrates a chance to build up.
