Re: Lynn's pony adventure

No updates and other than aquascape pics and perhaps a cleanup crew this tank is going to sit empty for several months.
For starters the chiller needs to be plumbed in and I need to be convinced that it will keep the tank the temp it needs to be to keep these animals healthy. My previous pony tank apparently ran too hot and twice I was able to keep them 6-9 months only to have them all die.
I do not want to do that again. If I can't get the temp stable where it needs to be, I can always have a nice FOWLR or even reef. Hopefully though we will see some ponies in a couple of months. I'll try to get pics soon of the scape and sand etc. soon. Actually I already have the pics but they haven't been uploaded yet. Maybe late this week.

I do seem to have flatworms in the tank though. Anybody know if they are a problem for seahorses? I could easily dose the tank now since it is just rock, water, and sand.
I have pics of them as well that I will try to load soon.
Thanks

Nope, flatworms pose no threat to the seahorses.

Re: Lynn's pony adventure

Thank you.
Now I won't worry about them anymore.
I was pretty sure they would be food if anything but if I was going to have to dose the tank now would be the time to do it.
Thanks again

Re: Lynn's pony adventure

The ponies won't eat them, from my experience. If you want to dose, now would definitely be the time. I just siphoned mine out with water changes and they eventually went away.

Re: Lynn's pony adventure

Hi Lynn,

flatworms in a tank without animals are quite simple to fight. Flatworms live on algae, in addition they must breathe over the whole body. They must take up oxygen thus all day long over here skin. If one continues to supply the tank not with oxygen (switch off skimmer, pumps, weaving), they die very fast. Even if one omits the light for 1 - 2 days and darkens the aquarium, they die to 100%.

A friend of me made only few days ago, with fish and corals in the tank. It was a 100% success. None flatworm outlived, but all other inhabitant.

Re: Lynn's pony adventure

Hey Lynn I can't wait to see some life in that tank! When are you thinking about adding your first fish? You should consider adding a Pearly Jawfish. They are gorgeous IMO. Mine is pretty shy, I actually thought she had died in the beginning because I never saw her. Now she hangs out near her burrow and is very mellow. I think one would make a great tankmate for Seahorses (correct me if I'm wrong) because they are so mellow. Do you have any recent pics?

Re: Lynn's pony adventure

I have to look through the pics or take more. Hopefully soon. I never really cycled the tank and have not tested at all. It also got the sand from the 24g and some hh with the rock so there is some life in there but I really need to test and scape the tank soon.
I will not add my first seahorses until Nov or Dec. I do have a yellow clown goby and a yellow watchman goby waiting in the clown tank. They will be going in with the ponies. I also want a purple fire fish. That and the ponies will be it I think. Well, I need some snails and perhaps a shrimp or two. I originally planned this tank for seahorses and jawfish and they are fine together. I had a pearly in the 24 with the ponies and no problems with agression or even food stealing so I would say they get along fine.
My husband insisted that we put eggcrate under the rock in this tank to make the rock more stable. I am afraid the jawfish will have issues there, even once I add the rest of my sand.
I need to change my sig line but gotta go find Woodstock's directions on how to do it.

Hey Lynn! I'm going outside, you up for it? (Inside joke)
How deep are you making the sand bed in your 90? If you go with six inches, I don't think egg crate under the SB will make a difference to the jawfish.
Sorry to hear about the Elegance. I think this thread needs a lot more pictures!

I had fun at MACNA and enjoyed talking to you and Frank. You are a hoot! Next year, I will make sure that I am staying at the hotel so we can really party! Give my regards to Frank!

Re: Lynn's pony adventure

This thread definitely needs pics. LOL
I am still trying to get MACNA pics up.
I have not really decided on the depth of the sandbed. Right now there is roughly an inch that came from the 24g. I know I want more than that but I am not sure I want to go all the way to 6 in. Well all tanks are a work in progress. I want at least 2 or so inches so the tank wil probably start somewhere around there. I am trying to take my time on this tank but really need to get started. Frank still hasn't plumbed in the chiller and monitoring the temp is key to what this tank becomes. If I can't keep it cool then I will do a reef or FOWLR.
Anyway. Great to meet you. See you in Atlanta if not before.

Meet you outside right after I buy this stuff.

Re: Lynn's pony adventure

I think I'd try Heinz method for flatworm eradication. What better time than now? If the tank doesn't work for ponies you're going to want to do it anyway. Why has every FOWLR I've tried to set up turned into a reef? I'd get rid of the flatworms now.

Re: Lynn's pony adventure

Hi Lynn .....

There is a further possibility. You darkens the aquarium, it must deep darkness be. Then one shines with a small flashlight on one point in the aquarium soil which one comfortably can reach. The small chaps will meet there all and you can suck it off with a hose after a waiting period (1-2 hours).

Re: Lynn's pony adventure

Lynn, I found the most beautiful fish that LOVES the colder water you plan to keep in your pony tank. Of course, you might want to ask panmanmatt if it's compatible, but from what I've read, it appears to be!

It is stunning and unusual and affordable and prefers cooler tank temps!

Re: Lynn's pony adventure

Beautiful fish. It sounds like it might be ok with the ponies too. I'll have to keep it in mind.
Thanks for the tip.
