Re: Lynn's pony adventure

Good luck Lynn! Glad you like your new tank. As for keeping the tank cycled, why not just replace the shrimp every week or so? that way there's always something easy to remove produceing nutrients.

Re: Lynn's pony adventure

Congrats Lynn. Cant waite to see pictures. What will you do with the seahorse tank next to your old set up? Also to keep the tank cycled you could add bottled bacteria every week or so.

Damsels in a cage? lol its a good question, what do you do while waiting, this must happen when starting up a tank and having stock in quarantine, how long will the bacteria live without ammonia?

Re: Lynn's pony adventure

LOL! I was in a LFS once, and they had an octopus in an acrylic critter keeper inside an aquarium with LR piled on top to keep him in.... Sorry to get off topic, but that post reminded me of that! lol..

Re: Lynn's pony adventure

Bacteria die-off should sustain a colony, they'll die, feeding a new colony growth, when food supply is exceeded, they'll die in a repetetive process.

Re: Lynn's pony adventure

I really like the idea of seahorses in a 90. Usually, they are in nanos, which are harder to keep stable. I can't wait to see the pics.

Re: Lynn's pony adventure

Once you get the CUC, your answer on how to keep the tank cycled is easy. Feed the CUC. You should be able to maintain the cycle even without by feeding the tank twice a week.

Or, you could just continue with the grocery store shrimp. It should maintain the cycle nicely.

Re: Lynn's pony adventure

You know, my LFS had an Oceanic 90 with just exactly the setup you described. With the lighting fixture, an MH/actinic/some sort of t5, it was selling for about $1500. I haven't dragged Mike there yet, but he'll see it!!!
