Re: Should I do it?

No I am still here trying to get the nerve up tp talk to hubby in more detail He was running some errands in his new car and now wants a mod for it so my chances may have just increased by waiting.

As for the spraybar, at it's most basic is a pump connected to a piece of pvc with the end capped and holes in it. Then the water comes out of the several smaller holes instead of the end of the pipe. I am sure I will take some time figuring out how many holes in which direction etc but that is the concept anyway. We kind of did something similar with the chiler in it's current configuration.
Assuming I get the tank I am seeing a return pump at whatever the return will handle going into a spray bar and then a second kind of closed loop where there is a piece of PVC and a pump to pull more water from the tank and then return via a spary bar. I'll have to check the return. I will already have the return as well as the watter coming from the chiller so I may even have enough. LOL
Worst case is another pump and some PVC stuff. I can live with that
OK gonna go talk to hubby now.
Wish me luck.

Let me see if I can find some pics.

Basically a spray bar is a length of PVC, or even rigid tubing, in the 1/2 size range with a series of holes drilled into it, a cap on one and and a fitting to attach some vinyl tubing to on the other. You can also just run all PVC from your pump up into the tank and not use the vinyl tubing. A lot of the old style canister filters came with spray bar returns and I have no clue why they quit using them and went to a single outlet return nozzel.

By an internal pump, are you referring to a powerhead in the tank or an internal return pump in your sump? It can be done both ways.

Re: Should I do it?

Bluespot, I can't post a pic but I can describe how to make one...

Basically, take a piece of PVC cut to the desired length and drill several holes in it facing in directions you want water flow. Glue a cap onto one end. Voila! Spray bar. The back pressure created when the water column is halted at the cap will make it "spray" equally out of each hole. With a little finagling, I'm sure it could be fitted to an internal pump.

Re: Should I do it?

Ok, not the best images, but here is one of the spray bar set ups I am using. This is on a 15 gallon long tank I have for some of my pipefish. The spray bar itself is off of an old Fluval canister filter. I have it being fed by a Mini-Jet 606 located in the sump. Nothing fancy yet gives me the flow I am looking for.

Re: Should I do it?

Well we just had a lengthy conversation that ended with me needing to go look at it again. He of course asked about things I didn't look at. He doesn't want to buy it today because his son is not here to help carry it until tomorrow night so it will have to wait until Tues at least before it comes home. I am at least allowed to go look at the details he mentioned and see if he will sell me the uncured LR and for how much.
That is certainly progress. He even said he loved where I want to put it and that being able to put the chiller in the garage was a great idea so I am very proud of myself.
Of course I have to finish the house cleaning before anything else. LOL
Can't blame him for getting a little leverage. So in about an hour I should be leaving to go talk to the guy at the store and see what we can work out. I will be sure to let you know what I find out and what hubby says.
So no pics today but perhaps more details.

Please keep the suggestions coming. Even if I do buy this tank it is going to be a long term project and we will be doing things bit by bit. I told him I wanted the ponies for Christmas so I have some time to create a very good environment for them.

Ohhh.. how exciting Lynn! I like that size/style. Altough Ihave never owned one, bowfronts are one of my favorites. I love the way they look. Tell Frank if he agrees, we can get him more 'special' corn next time I come over! LOL~

Loc-Line makes a spray bar

Not as cheap as a DIY but it looks nicer.

Re: Should I do it?

ROFL!!!!
I forgot all about the "special" corn.
It is moving closer and closer to reality from a dream.
I spent a bunch of time at the LFS talking about what I wanted to do etc.
We pretty much ended at $1000 for pretty much everything I needed except sand and livestock. So tank, stand, lights, overfow, pump, 100lbs of cured lr, salt, and RO water. I think that was it. I have the skimmer and a 30g to use as a sump. I will need some misc plumbing stuff but that shouldn't be much. Then I wait a while and add some sand and wait some more and add ponies and jawfish. He doesn't have dry sand only the "live" sand so I will get that from somewhere else and save some money. Particularly since I plan on going slowly with this tank I should be fine watiting a bit. I can also seed it from the other 3 tanks.
I may have agreed to give up the 24 in trade (with hubby not the store) I only have the yellow watchman, yellow clown goby and cleaner and perppermint shrimp other than the angel that is supposed to go to the lfs. Basically I can re-arrange to accommodate everyone.

Let me know what you might want for that 24 if you have to get rid of it.

Re: Should I do it?

Hey, I didn't even think of that, You did want a nano after all. I did not do the light upgrade so it is still the PC lights but they are brand new bulbs. I'll talk to Frank about a price assuming we go with the other tank. I'm sure we could work something out.

Re: Should I do it?

Lynn, Let me mention one thing regarding bow fronts. A good friend of mine has one and his biggest complaint is that they can be a real pain to clean. You can only go side to side and not up and down. He said as much as he likes his, he wouldn't buy another for that reason.

Just passing that along for what it's worth. I don't know personally, I've never had one.

Re: Should I do it?

I am excited for you Lynn!
I think going in by hand with a cleaner pad should be just fine. I do it now on my flat front so i don't catch sand in the mag float. I just use it for the large area and do all the edges with a pad by hand. It give me an excuse to tweak things on the rock that way also.
