Scuba Cert

Hello everyone, I have been pondering a scuba certification. So what cert type do you recommend? I understand there are several (PADI, NASDS, NAUI, etc..) so which do you recommend and why?

About what does it cost to get certified?

Would you buy your own equiptment or rent?

Thanks

I dont know about what types, i always that anyone was good. No pro thou

In S.Dakota is cost $200 and 2wks to get certified, in Guam it cost $150 and 3days

Buy your own mask, flippers and wetsuit, and rent your own tanks

My father in-law is the one who is cert. i am goin to get it done when i goto Guam, but we have a few big lakes here and he has a speargun and shots walleyes, im the fat guy that stays up top and watches the boat, thats how i catch my carp, lol. And the billboards was for WALL DRUG the oasis in the middle of nowhere is where i live, lol. I think Wall Drug was the first company to use billboards, just a little "who-cares" info. lol

Re: Scuba Cert

LoL, SD is the longest/dullest drive ive experienced, heres a true story, in HS i was driving to Minneapolis from SD and fell asleep three times, all three the times the ridges on the side of the road woke me up, i finally decided to pull over and make my sleepin buddy drive, i guess it was a good idea

Re: Scuba Cert

Go NAUI. It's the original. PADI is a little more agressive on thier dive charts where NAUI is more conservative. I would rather error to the conservative side. Really it dosen't matter they are both great outfits. I see you're from Tampa. Scuba Quest has some good instructors. I took a re-cert class at the one in Brandon on hwy 60. They also have one on N. Dale Mabry in the carrolwood area.
I would buy everything but the tank. It's nice dive with familiar eqiupment. When you're done with your cert sign up for DAN Divers Alert Network. You'll learn more about them during class.
Have fun and enjoy.

Re: Scuba Cert

NAUI all day, padi stands for pay and die instantly i took a padi course after i was NAUI cert. and what a difference padi divers dont understand the importance of safety especially the buddy system, i onced dived in cayman with an experienced diver who had never been certified and the fact that i had to leave my decompression stop and go rescue him from riding a bicycle accross the ocean floor (someone had left the bike there at the divesite) caused me to run out of air and i was forced to use his octopuss, in short if you dive padi do some of your own research because i would bet that many of the diving deaths are due to poor certification training just look at the difference in course time two weeks for NAUI or three days for the padi. also get a dive computer diving is extremly dangerous and very rewarding so have a good time but remember safety FIRST

Re: Scuba Cert

I also recommend NAUI and Scuba Quest, My son and I both got our certs there. One other thing I didn't see mentioned is, since you are going to be getting certified and like nggrant@mac.com said, buy a computerand go a head and sign up for the NITROX class, by no means does this mean you can't get DCS, but breathing more of a concentration of oxygen sure does help to deter it. Plus we don't have the SIT times air divers have on the boat. You'll learn all about the differences in class. Good luck, have fun and the most important thing is to be safe and know your limits.
Steve

I'm sorry I didn't realize until after I posted, that the question was from last year, Warnberg is probably already certified by now...OOPS
