| Social Darwinism victim | Re: Collecting in west palm! Appreciate the info. We might visit a friend in Fla. and were planning on looking into going out. Maybe we'll just go for snorkeling.

| Star Polyps | Re: Collecting in west palm! i wish i lived in a climate like florida or cali. i could just be being ignorant, but i don't think there's anything here to gather for my tank. i gather that collecting is common, but i was just wondering if anyone has done the opposite. i know it's dangerous for the ecosystem and all that, but so is taking. someone posted a link on this site about lionfish not native to the area getting loose and breeding. i thought it was great, but didn't take the local ecosystem into mind. up here in Connecticut and i think NY, from what i understand, a shipment of parakeets got loose, and adapted to wildlife. however, having no natural predators their out of control. anyway i'm just rambling now, has anyone set a domesticated creature free?

| Sunshine Reefer ![]() | Re: Collecting in west palm! I have seen it. I have not seen it done well. In Miami there are quite a few escaped birds that form colonies. They generally become a nuisance at best.

| Ricordea | Re: Collecting in west palm! OH NO! Don't ever let loose exotics! Lionfish cause havoc! Cichlids cost us millions! Tilapia are breeding like crazy and pushing out the native species! NEVER EVER EVER release an exotic. So many people do that down here and causes so many problems. I have had to euthanize literally 100s of plecos that were released into the water, I hate doing it, but it is the right thing to do. (Plus throwing them back is a misdemeanor and I would lose my fishing license). Me and my brother have spent days removing exotics from our waters, it is heart breaking but it has to be done. Never let lose your pet, if you can't keep them donate them to an LFS, or put them down. Don't destroy the fisheries because you have a pet you can't keep. The native fisheries didn't do anything wrong either. |
