i say this as my best advice to a beginner. do not,,,and i repeat,,,,,DO NOT look at my tank as an example....i have a well practised eye, decades of experience, and a trunkload of failures to allow me to force the issue and get away with things most cannot~

Re: how to get fish to eat flake?

Any food is better than brine shrimp... i consider it to be nothing but lettuce

Have you ever tried to make your own homemade mush? It is super simple and the fish/corals love it! It is very nutritious too

Re: how to get fish to eat flake?

You can buy prepackaged frozen foods at your LFS or make your own. Using a food processor, I blend fresh shrimp, red tuna, white tuna, scallops, nori, freshly pressed garlic, cyclo-peze, and clams. Add water as needed to keep the mixture as a thick paste.... spoon into a ziplock freezer bag into a thin sheet and freeze. Voila~~

Re: how to get fish to eat flake?

I would suggest as much variety to the fishes diet as possible.I randomize feeding different types of frozen throughout the week and also feed a small amount of flake/pellet foods to supplement their routine.I use everything from Mysis,Plankton,Mussel,Cyclopeeze,Algae,Enriched Brine, etc.

Re: how to get fish to eat flake?

hell eat the flakes just soak them in a little garlic extreme first or some tiny frozen cubes of prepackaged squid. Before you feed the tank though let it rest in a cup and then strain it through a brine shrimp net the water/gel that binds the frozen foods together is loaded with phosphates that is very harmful to your tank

Re: how to get fish to eat flake?

Good luck. I haven't been able to get my fish to eat the flake foods yet. Even when I try to mix them in with the frozen foods they seem to spit it out in favour of the more meaty/solid foods.

Re: how to get fish to eat flake?

I feed my fish Omega One Marine Flakes. I got it for my Sailfin Tang but my Blue dot Puffer and Niger trigger like it also. The Sailfin starts swimming around like a little puppy getting fed when he sees the can come out. He even eats out of my hand when I put it in the tank. Once it sinks my 2 Convict gobies eat it up.

Re: how to get fish to eat flake?

I stay completely away from flake. Frozen Mysis especially from PE is really good, squid, shrimp, Emerald Entree is also great for Omnivores

Re: how to get fish to eat flake?

Well I know I've listed this before but I feed several different types of food and my fish look like they love me for it.

I cycle through the following foods, but I only feed my tank 3-4 times per week.

HBH Supersoft
Omega One Marine Flake
Cyclopeeze Flake
Cyclopeeze Frozen
Frozen Mysis
Frozen Brine
Ocean Nutrition Formula One Frozen
Ocean Nutrition Prime Reef Frozen
Ocean Nutrtion Prime Reef Flake
Kent Marine Phyto
Kent Marine ZooMax
Ocean Nutrtion Seaweed Selects
Julian Sprung Purple Seaweed Sheets

How's that for a menu?

Feed a variety, you'll find one they like, and then they'll be more accepting of any food you give them. Before I feed I soak all of my foods in RO water, and occasionally Garlic Xtreme.

Re: how to get fish to eat flake?

My longnose hawk won't eat anything but frozen mysid and brine shrimp. He eats mysid out of my hand, but when I feed anything else, just looks at the other fish as if to say... you going to eat that stuff? Won't even eat newly hatched baby brine!

Re: how to get fish to eat flake?

Long nose hawks have VERY small mouths. As with all hawk fish they will eat anything they can fit into thier mouths in the way of crustaceans, bristle worms and most food offered. Thats why more times than not they will not accept anything but the tiny bits, because they cant fit it into thier mouths. Try some frozen silver side's or squid pieces, chop them up while frozen in to much smaller perticles and try that. I bet he will take it then. FYI they dont eat brine in the wild, so thats probably why he wont eat bbs for you.
I have gotten some of my dwarf seahorses on frozen cyclo-peez based on the same theory. The trick is to feed them frozen from birth. With dwarf seahorses that is.
WC Will not eat any thing but brine, copepods, or rotifers though.
CB can be trained.
Hope this helps!

Meaty foods are much better than brine or flakes for the lower phosphates alluded to earlier in this post. Small pieces as FragMaster suggested!
